What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator - Piping position at MRA Unlimited Inc.?
seeking a Senior Estimator with deep fabrication experience to lead estimating for industrial projects (e.g., power, mining, oil & gas, chemicals, water/wastewater, food & bev, heavy manufacturing). You’ll own the full bid cycle—from takeoff through handoff—covering shop and field scopes such as structural steel, plate work, tanks/vessels, skid packages, pipe spools, and modular assemblies. This role is ideal for a hands-on estimator who understands fab shop workflows, codes, weld processes, and the realities of production rates and erection.
What You’ll Do
- Estimate Ownership
- Lead conceptual, budgetary, and hard bids (lump-sum/Unit Rate/T&M/GMP) across diverse industrial scopes.
- Perform detailed material takeoffs (MTO) from drawings/models; develop BOMs and labor hour builds using shop routings and weld maps.
- Model shop and field labor using standard data (e.g., complexity factors, joint counts, weld inches, fit-up time, NDE allowances, handling, coatings).
- Analyze RFQs/specs, T&Cs, commercial risk, and constructability; drive clarifications and RFI lists.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Management
- Develop bid packages; solicit and level supplier/sub quotes (steel, plate, pipe, valves, coatings, heat treat, machining, PWHT, NDE, logistics, erection).
- Build make/buy strategies aligned to shop capacity, schedule, and risk.
- Pricing & Proposal Development
- Build complete cost models (directs, indirects, burden, overhead, contingency, fee).
- Create polished proposals with scope narratives, inclusions/exclusions, alternates, and schedule assumptions.
- Present estimates to leadership and clients; lead internal reviews and risk workshops.
- Handoff & Support
- Transition awarded work to Project Management, Engineering, and Shop Leadership; maintain estimate basis, assumptions, and WBS/CBS mapping.
- Support change orders, value engineering, and cost trending as required.
- Process & Data
- Maintain historical cost database, production rates, and benchmark curves; implement estimating standards, templates, and checklists.
- Mentor junior estimators and review their takeoffs and proposals.
What You’ll Bring
- Experience: 7–12 years estimating for fabrication-heavy industrial projects within a fab shop, EPC, or industrial contractor.
- Technical:
- Strong reading of IFC/ISS drawings, P&IDs, isos, GA layouts, weld symbols; familiarity with 3D models (e.g., Navisworks, Tekla) a plus.
- Knowledge of codes/standards: ASME (e.g., Sec VIII, B31.1/B31.3), AWS D1.1, AISC, API (as applicable).
- Understanding of shop processes: nesting, cutting, rolling, forming, fit-up, welding (SMAW/GMAW/FCAW/GTAW/SAW), NDE, coatings, hydro, packaging, and shipping.
- Competence in estimating/ERP tools (e.g., FabSuite/STRUMIS, Viewpoint, SAP, Oracle), takeoff tools (Bluebeam/On-Screen Takeoff), and Excel-based cost models.
- Commercial: Proficient with bid forms, alternates, allowances, terms & conditions, and risk allocation.
- Soft Skills: Detail-driven, organized, persuasive communicator; able to work under bid deadlines and lead cross-functional inputs.
- Education: BS in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience. CPE/CEI or similar credential a plus.
