Mr. Excavator is a family-owned and operated heavy civil excavating contractor, headquartered in Kirtland, Ohio, with a regional office in Columbus. We proudly serve the commercial, education, healthcare, energy, and industrial sectors throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
We self-perform all aspects of site development and roadwork, including site clearing, demolition, mass excavation, and underground utility installation. Our crews are union Operators and Laborers, and we prioritize equipping them with the tools, training, and support they need to do the job safely and efficiently.
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Heavy Equipment Operator with experience in civil construction and site development. This position is based out of our Columbus, OH regional office and will work on a variety of utility and earthwork projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy construction equipment, including:
- Excavators (track hoes)
- Wheel loaders
- Bulldozers
- Off-road trucks
- Compaction equipment
- Perform routine daily machine maintenance (greasing, fueling, oil checks, basic cleaning)
- Safely operate equipment around laborers, utilities, and active job sites
- Follow and uphold Mr. Excavator’s safety program, with emphasis on trench and site safety
- Work cooperatively with foremen, laborers, and other operators to complete assigned tasks
- Read and interpret construction blueprints and site plans
- Work in varying weather conditions and environments
- Overtime work as needed to meet project timelines
Requirements
- At least 2 years’ full‑time experience operating heavy equipment in storm, sanitary sewer, or waterline construction or maintenance
- Must be able to read blueprints and follow verbal instructions
- Strong attention to safety and situational awareness
- Reliable, punctual, and strong work ethic
- Comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather
- OSHA 30-Hour certification preferred (training provided if needed)
- Union membership (Operators Union) or willingness to join
