Job Summary:
The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) holds full responsibility for the oversight, compliance, and
safe operation of the pharmacy. The PIC ensures adherence to all California State Board of
Pharmacy regulations, federal laws, and internal protocols. This role includes supervision of
pharmacy staff, management of daily pharmacy operations, quality assurance oversight, and
regulatory reporting obligations.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure pharmacy operations comply with California Business and Professions Code and
Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations.
- Maintain licensure requirements for the pharmacy and all pharmacists.
- Submit written notice to the Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of any change in PIC status.
- Complete the Board’s Pharmacist-in-Charge Training and attestation as required.
Daily Operations
- Manage and supervise daily pharmacy functions, including staffing and workflow.
- Oversee dispensing practices, prescription verification, and documentation standards.Page 2 of 4
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and security of all medications, including controlled
substances.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Directly supervise pharmacy staff; ensure performance management, training, and
support.
- Develop technician training manuals and oversee staff competency in workflow and safety.
- Maintain adequate staffing levels to support safety and prevent fatigue-related errors.
Inventory & Record Management
- Establish procedures for drug procurement, inventory control, and disposal.
- Ensure compliance with CSOS, CURES, and DEA recordkeeping requirements.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure regulatory and internal compliance.
Quality Assurance & Safety
- Implement quality assurance programs to monitor pharmacy performance and patient
care outcomes.
- Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous drugs in accordance with USP <800>.
- Identify and mitigate safety risks for patients, staff, and the public.
Communication & Reporting
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, auditors, and executive leadership.
- Provide regular updates to ownership or corporate leadership on pharmacy status and

Qualifications:
Education
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited
school.
Licensure
- Valid and active California Pharmacist License.
- Must not be listed on the OIG or SAM exclusion lists.
Experience
- 2–4 years of pharmacy experience required, with previous leadership or PIC experience
preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Deep understanding of California and federal pharmacy laws and operational standards.
- Proficiency in pharmacy software, CURES, inventory systems, and QA documentation tools.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Clear and effective communication with internal staff and external stakeholders.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and work in a moderately noisy
environment.
- Use of PPE when handling hazardous drugs or working in sterile environments.
