Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in transit and infrastructure design to lead electrical engineering efforts on major capital projects for Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) agencies including NYCT, LIRR, and Metro-North.
This is a 100% design-focused role responsible for leading electrical system design, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring high-quality, code-compliant deliverables across complex transit projects including stations, tunnels, substations, and ancillary facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical design for transit infrastructure projects, including:
- Medium and low voltage power distribution systems
- Lighting systems (normal, emergency, egress)
- Grounding and bonding systems
- Standby/emergency power systems (generators, UPS)
- Traction power and substation interface (as applicable)
- Oversee development of design drawings, calculations, and specifications in accordance with MTA standards
- Perform and/or review:
- Load flow, short circuit, and coordination studies
- Arc flash studies and protection schemes
- Serve as discipline lead, ensuring technical quality, consistency, and adherence to project scope, schedule, and budget
- Lead design coordination meetings with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers
- Support design-build and design-bid-build project delivery
- Conduct field investigations, site surveys, and condition assessments
- Review and approve shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals during construction phase support
- Ensure compliance with:
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards
- NYC Electrical Code
- MTA design criteria, specifications, and PRDC requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- 8–12 years of experience in electrical design (MEP / transit / infrastructure preferred)
- Strong experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit
- Proficiency in power system analysis tools (e.g., SKM, ETAP, EasyPower)
- Demonstrated ability to lead design efforts and manage technical teams
- Experience with MicroStation. Ability to draft work.
- Ability to work nights occasionally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with MTA agencies (NYCT, LIRR, Metro-North)
- Experience with traction power systems, substations, and rail electrification
- Familiarity with MicroStation (Bentley) for MTA projects
- Experience supporting large-scale, multi-discipline infrastructure programs
- Prior experience in a discipline lead or deputy design manager role
- EIT certification preferred; PE license or on track preferred
