About Mousam River STEM Academy
Mousam River STEM Academy is a hands-on, project-based private school located in Alfred, Maine serving students from Preschool through Elementary (PK–5).
Our program blends STEM education, outdoor learning, and project-based instruction to create an engaging educational experience that inspires curiosity, creativity, and problem solving.
Our 9-acre campus includes fields, woods, trails, a pond, and access to the Mousam River, allowing students to explore nature while learning through real-world experiences.
Students regularly participate in hands-on STEM activities, field trips, collaborative projects, and outdoor exploration as part of their school day.

Position Overview
Mousam River STEM Academy is seeking a creative and flexible elementary teacher who enjoys hands-on learning, project-based instruction, and working in a small school environment.
Teachers interested in working with students from Preschool through 5th grade are encouraged to apply.
Teachers hired for this role will be assigned to a specific classroom within the PK–5 range based on their experience, qualifications, and program needs.
This position does not involve teaching all grades PK–5 simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
- Deliver instruction aligned with established learning standards
- Use creative, hands-on teaching methods to support student learning
- Differentiate instruction to support students with different learning needs
STEM & Project-Based Learning
- Design and lead hands-on STEM activities and projects
- Encourage curiosity, experimentation, and problem-solving
- Integrate science, technology, engineering, and math into everyday lessons
Student Progress & Assessment
- Track student academic and developmental progress
- Maintain organized records of student learning
- Write student progress reports
- Use assessments and observations to guide instruction
Classroom Environment
- Maintain a safe, organized, and respectful classroom
- Establish clear routines and expectations
- Implement effective classroom management strategies
Outdoor Learning
- Lead students in daily outdoor exploration and play
- Supervise students during outdoor learning activities
- Maintain a safe environment in all seasons and weather conditions
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with parents and families
- Participate in conferences and school events
- Collaborate with staff to maintain a positive school culture
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in one of the following (or related field):
- Elementary Education
- Early Childhood Education
- Education
- Child Development
- STEM-related field
Experience
Experience working with children in an educational or learning environment is required.
Relevant experience may include:
- Elementary school teaching
- Preschool teaching
- Outdoor education
- Children's museums or science centers
- Educational camps
- Experiential learning programs
Experience with hands-on or project-based learning environments is highly valued.

Outdoor Learning Requirement
Students spend at least one hour outdoors each day, and teachers must be comfortable participating in outdoor activities in all seasons including:
- Cold weather
- Warm weather
- Rain
- Snow
We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear!
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and move actively throughout the day
- Ability to sit on the floor and interact with students
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
- Ability to supervise children outdoors in varying weather conditions
Certifications & Requirements
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Maine criminal background check
- Valid driver's license
