Position Description
The Groundskeeper, under general supervision, performs routine and skilled ground maintenance and gardening work.
Qualifications
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
- Must possess one year of experience comparable to that of a custodian in a school district.
- Must possess a Pesticide Applicators License
- Minimum requirement: High school diploma or equivalent
- Groundskeeping experience, performing duties similar to those listed below.
Skills/Abilities
- Use various gardening and grounds maintenance tools and supplies
- Operate power-driven grounds maintenance equipment
- Understand and follow verbal and written directions
- Adjust work schedules to meet unusual conditions
- Perform heavy manual labor
- Maintain cooperative working relationships
- Comply with the physical/mental demands as described on the ADA profile
Knowledge
- Of basic methods and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, shrubs, and trees
- Of basic use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other chemicals
- Of groundskeeping materials, tools and equipment, and their safe use and care
- Of the operation of the auxiliary mechanical equipment carried on power-driven equipment
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities
- Plants, cultivates, waters and sprays ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers
- Plants, fertilizes, waters and cares for lawns, using hand and power mowers
- Prunes trees and shrubs, mixes and spreads weed abatement chemicals
- Spades and fertilizes flower beds and sets out plants; prepares and treats soil for planting
- Aids in keeping assigned area free from pests and plant diseases
- Rakes leaves, hoes weeds and performs general grounds maintenance work
- Sweeps walks and picks up papers
- Keeps hoes, supplies, tools and equipment in proper condition and repair
- Operates and makes minor adjustments and emergency repairs to power-driven equipment
- Installs, maintains and operates sprinkling and drainage systems
- Operates power equipment, including mowers, rototillers and tractors
- Operates auxiliary mechanical equipment on the vehicles
- Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to trucks and equipment
- Maintains athletic fields and playground equipment
- May be required to drive a truck
- May be assigned custodial or maintenance duties either seasonally or incidental to gardening activities
- Uses tools, equipment and materials safely and as directed
- Performs site safety inspection
- Performs other related duties as assigned
