JOB SUMMARY

 

The Retail/Energy Location Manager provides overall leadership and regulatory compliance for a diverse business portfolio that includes retail operations, tire service, petroleum and propane operations (Bulk Fuel Plant, Propane Facility, and Rail Facility), inventory management, and transportation logistics. 

 

This position is accountable for profitability, employee development, customer experience, and protection of company assets across all assigned functions, while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement. 
 

The primary duty of this position is management of the assigned operations and personnel. The Retail/Energy Location Manager customarily and regularly directs the work of employees and exercises authority, or provides recommendations given particular weight, regarding hiring, promotion, scheduling, performance management, corrective action, compensation, and other employment decisions.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

 

Reports to the Retail Division Manager and Energy Division Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations Leadership

 

  • Direct and manage the daily operation of assigned retail, energy, fuel, propane, tire service, and related business activities. 
  • Ensure consistent service delivery and efficient execution across all operations. 
  • Oversee product movement, fuel distribution activities, rail unloading operations, and associated logistics. 
  • Coordinate activities among employees, vendors, contractors, transportation providers, and support departments. 
  • Monitor performance and implement improvements that enhance efficiency and service levels. 
  • Maintain readiness of facilities, equipment, storage locations, and infrastructure. 
  • Support business initiatives, growth opportunities, and strategic company objectives. 
  • Ensure established standards, policies, and procedures are consistently followed. 

 

Financial Management & Business Performance 

 

  • Maintain accountability for sales performance, margins, labor costs, operating expenses, inventory investments, and overall profitability. 
  • Review financial reports and implement corrective steps as needed. 
  • Support sales growth, customer retention, and market development opportunities. 
  • Assist with pricing strategies, market analysis, and business planning efforts. 
  • Manage budgets, expenses, and controllable costs to achieve business objectives. 
  • Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and improve financial performance. 

 

Employee Management & Development 

 

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, coach, mentor, and develop employees. 
  • Establish performance expectations and hold employees accountable for results. 
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing development and coaching. 
  • Address employee concerns and administer corrective action in accordance with company policy. 
  • Develop staffing plans and ensure appropriate workforce coverage. 
  • Review and approve employee schedules, attendance records, and payroll-related documentation. 
  • Foster a positive workplace culture centered on professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and customer service. 
  • Support succession planning and employee development initiatives. 

 

Customer, Vendor & Community Relations 

 

  • Promote and maintain exceptional customer service standards. 
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with customers, vendors, business partners, and community stakeholders. 
  • Resolve customer concerns, complaints, and service issues in a timely and professional manner. 
  • Support marketing initiatives, business development opportunities, and community involvement activities. 
  • Represent Mountain View Co-op in a professional manner consistent with company values. 
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen customer loyalty and expand business relationships. 

 

Inventory, Asset & Logistics Management 

 

  • Oversee purchasing, receiving, storage, inventory control, and reconciliation activities. 
  • Monitor inventory levels, movement, replenishment, and product availability. 
  • Maintain accountability for fuel, propane, merchandise, parts, facilities, equipment, vehicles, and other company assets. 
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and repair programs. 
  • Ensure required inspections and monitoring activities are completed accurately and on time. 
  • Protect company assets from misuse, loss, theft, or damage. 

 

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management 

 

  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment for employees, customers, contractors, and visitors. 
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. 
  • Conduct required training, inspections, meetings, and follow-up actions. 
  • Investigate and document incidents, injuries, accidents, spills, releases, and operational concerns. 
  • Ensure employees receive appropriate training and follow established procedures. 
  • Maintain emergency preparedness and business continuity plans. 
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, contractors, emergency responders, and company leadership as necessary. 
  • Serve as the operational lead during emergencies and significant business disruptions.

Administrative Responsibilities 

 

  • Maintain accurate operational, personnel, inventory, financial, safety, and training records. 
  • Complete reports, documentation, and communications in a timely manner. 
  • Communicate effectively with leadership, Human Resources, Accounting, Safety, and support departments. 
  • Participate in meetings, training programs, and company initiatives. 
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned. 

 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES 

 

Knowledge Of: 

  • Retail and convenience store operations 
  • Petroleum, propane, bulk fuel, and related operational activities 
  • Inventory management, purchasing, and asset control practices 
  • Operational leadership and employee supervision

  • Budgeting, financial reporting, and profitability management 
  • Transportation, logistics, and supply chain coordination 
  • Workplace safety and regulatory compliance requirements 
  • Microsoft Office and business management systems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

 

Required: 

  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Three (3) years of retail, customer service, or related business experience. 
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or management experience. 
  • Valid Montana driver's license and ability to meet Mountain View Co-op driving requirements. 

 

Preferred: 

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Agriculture, Agribusiness, Marketing, Logistics, Energy, or a related field. 
  • Experience managing multiple departments, operations, or business units. 
  • Experience in fuel, propane, bulk petroleum, transportation, distribution, or rail-related operations. 
  • Experience with budgeting, inventory management, financial reporting, and business planning. 
  • Experience developing sales strategies and business growth initiatives. 
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must regularly: 

  • Stand and walk for extended periods. 
  • Communicate effectively with customers, employees, and vendors. 
  • Operate computers, POS systems, and office equipment.

  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. 
  • Drag a hose and connect/disconnect fittings as part of fuel delivery and rail car unloading operations. 
  • Move throughout the facility, surrounding grounds, fuel sites, and rail unloading area. 
  • Enter, operate, and exit motor vehicles; navigate uneven terrain. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

 

  • Work is performed in retail, office, and outdoor fuel-site environments. 
  • Regular exposure to varying weather conditions may occur; travel is required in all weather conditions. 
  • Exposure to fuels, lubricants, chemicals, propane, and other agricultural products may occur, including at the rail unloading/transload area. 
  • Moderate to loud noise levels are common depending on location. 
  • The position may require occasional after-hours support, emergency response, and travel between locations.
