Mountain Recreation is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead the maintenance and operations of our recreation facilities and grounds district-wide. This position is responsible for overseeing preventative and corrective maintenance programs, supervising maintenance staff and contractors, and ensuring facilities, equipment, and building systems are safe, efficient, and well-maintained. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong technical knowledge in facility systems, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to creating safe, welcoming environments for staff and guests while supporting the high-quality recreational experiences our community expects.

POSITION DETAILS

Job Title: Maintenance Supervisor

Location: District-wide • Gypsum Recreation Center (Gypsum, CO), Gypsum Creek Pool (Gypsum, CO), Eagle Pool and Ice Rink (Eagle, CO)

Employment Type: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Schedule: Variable schedule based on operational needs. Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and special events. This position may also require emergency response and on-call availability outside of regular working hours to address urgent facility or operational issues.

Supervision Required: Works under the general guidance and direction of the Superintendent of Recreation Facilities

Supervision Exercised: Provides direct supervision, leadership, training, scheduling, and performance oversight for full-time and part-time facility maintenance staff


Work Environment and Physical Demands: This position works both indoors at Mountain Recreation facilities and outdoors at parks, pools, sports complexes, and recreation sites in varying weather and environmental conditions. The work environment and physical demands described below are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position. 

  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including sun, heat, cold, wind, snow, rain, wet and/or humid conditions, and varying temperatures
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, loud equipment, and hazardous or caustic chemicals such as paint, cleaning agents, pesticides, fuels, and pool chemicals
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels in facility, maintenance, and outdoor operational environments
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of materials and equipment up to 50 pounds, and occasional lifting or moving of items exceeding 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment
  • Physical activities regularly include climbing ladders, kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, reaching, standing, walking, traversing uneven terrain, repetitive hand and foot motion, and prolonged periods of sitting or driving
  • Position may require operation of maintenance equipment, vehicles, tools, and machinery in both indoor and outdoor environments

Salary: $71,012 – $88,766 annually DOE; staff in this position are eligible for a $1/hour incentive for Spanish/English bilingual and can pass the language competency test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

General Statement of Duties: Oversees, coordinates, and performs the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of Mountain Recreation facilities, grounds, parks, pools, and related systems. Provides leadership and direction to maintenance staff while ensuring facilities are clean, functional, safe, and well-maintained to support high-quality recreational experiences for the community.


Examples of Duties:

  • Supervises full-time and part-time maintenance staff, including scheduling, training, assigning duties, monitoring performance, and promoting safe and efficient work practices.
  • Oversees and performs maintenance, repair, and operational support for facility systems and infrastructure including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical systems, pool pump rooms, painting, roofing, masonry, doors, windows, fixtures, appliances, playgrounds, concrete surfaces, office furniture, lock and key systems, and District vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensures facilities, grounds, equipment, and building systems are maintained in safe, clean, functional, and operational condition.
  • Promotes and maintains a safe working environment by following safety protocols, identifying hazards, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and operational procedures.
  • Provides leadership, direction, coaching, and support to assigned personnel while fostering a positive, collaborative, and respectful team environment.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, supervisors, vendors, contractors, and other departments to coordinate work, resolve issues, and support operational needs.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with vendors and contractors for the procurement of parts, materials, supplies, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Oversees and coordinates the work of maintenance contractors and outside service providers to ensure quality, safety, and completion of assigned work.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains preventative maintenance programs for facilities, equipment, vehicles, and building systems.
  • Performs specialized and general maintenance tasks as needed and assists other maintenance team members with projects and operational support.
  • Maintains accurate inventories of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies and ensures equipment is operated, maintained, and stored safely and appropriately.
  • Immediately reports hazardous conditions, operational concerns, safety risks, or facility issues to Facility Superintendents and appropriate leadership staff.
  • Assists with departmental budgeting, including identifying maintenance priorities, preparing cost estimates, and supporting future maintenance and capital improvement projects
  • Conducts routine inspections of facilities, parks, pools, grounds, and equipment to identify repair, maintenance, safety, and operational needs.
  • Participates in and directs maintenance crews while work is in progress, providing guidance, oversight, training, and quality control to ensure work meets District standards and expectations.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned to support District operations and community recreation services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, and equipment used in facility, park, pool, and grounds maintenance, repair, construction, and preventative maintenance programs, including building systems, mechanical systems, and operational safety practices. 


Skills and abilities: 

  • Working knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair pumps, boilers, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, pool systems, and other related mechanical and building equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public recreation facility operations and maintenance
  • Knowledge of modern leadership, supervisory, and management practices, including staff development, training, and performance oversight
  • Skill in the safe operation and use of maintenance tools, equipment, vehicles, and computerized maintenance and administrative systems
  • Proficiency in computer applications including email, work order systems, spreadsheets, and other operational software programs
  • Ability to lead, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work of assigned staff, contractors, and volunteers
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Ability to identify facility, operational, and safety concerns and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff, vendors, contractors, community members, and partner organizations
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment, initiative, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to represent Mountain Recreation in a professional, respectful, and service-oriented manner consistent with the District’s mission and values

Tools and Equipment Used: Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools, maintenance and diagnostic equipment, cleaning equipment, communication devices, and facility maintenance systems in the performance of daily duties. Equipment may include, but is not limited to, hand tools, power tools, pressure washers, chemical testing kits, pool maintenance equipment, vacuums, cleaning materials, radios/walkie-talkies, computers, tablets, and work order systems. Operates District vehicles and equipment including trucks, trailers, tractors, utility vehicles/gators, maintenance machinery, and ice resurfacing equipment such as the Olympia/ice resurfacer. Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment in accordance with District safety standards and operational procedures is required.


Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older; AND
  • Completion of a two-year trade, technical, or vocational program related to facility maintenance, construction trades, mechanical systems, or a related field; OR 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience; AND
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in facility maintenance, parks maintenance, public works, building operations, construction trades, or a related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of leadership, supervisory, or crew lead experience overseeing staff, contractors, or maintenance operations
  • Experience with building systems, mechanical systems, HVAC, plumbing, pool systems, preventative maintenance programs, and/or specialized maintenance trades preferred
  • Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment, tools, vehicles, and machinery used in facility and grounds operations
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills
  • Any satisfactory combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may be considered
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record with no major driving infractions within the past seven years

Certifications:

  • CPO or AFO preferred, or to be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
