GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB


Reporting ultimately to the Executive Director, a substitute bus driver is a part-time bus driver position that provides safe, efficient and on-time transportation of children to and from assigned schools, field trip destinations, and athletic activities. the hours for this position vary weekly according to the needs of the program. This position is an on-campus position, which means that an essential function of an employee’s job duties is to work in-person on campus. All employees are expected to cooperate in promoting the best interests of the school. Follows directions of the Transportation Director for bus driving duties.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Bus Driver
Obeys all Federal, State, and Local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes and transportation operation guidelines.
Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses. This includes clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency.
Maintains safe driver standards and applicable physical and dexterity standards.
Maintains knowledge of assigned bus routes and students assigned to the bus.
Maintains discipline when students are on the bus; reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
Discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations.
Transports only authorized students.
Identifies and reports changes in run directions and routes to the Transportation Specialist.
Performs pre and post inspection activities to include, but not limited to - mechanical defects, adequate fuel levels, items left on the bus, vandalism to the bus interior, and to ensure all students have exited the vehicle by the end of the route. Demonstrate knowledge of, and support for Mountain Island Charter School’s mission, vision, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and ethical code of behavior


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


Graduation from high school and some experience driving large vehicles with some experience in transporting humans preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possess, or have the ability to obtain before receiving a bus route, a valid Class B commercial driver's license and a valid school bus driver certification issued by the NCDMV.
Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the NC General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The physical activity of this position.


Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.


Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.


Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.


Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.


Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.


Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.


Standing. Particularly for sustained periods of time. Approximate duration 8 hours


Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.


Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.


Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.


Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.


Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.


Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.


Feeling. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.


Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.


Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.


Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers


Physical exertion of the position.


Medium work. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.

The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.


The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as driving and facility inspection

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus.


Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.


Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses. General knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions.


Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department Operating Instructions.


Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.


Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus. Ability to maintain a clean school bus.

Ability to complete required reports.


Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.


Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.


Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
