POSITION TITLE: Transportation Fleet Mechanic (Diesel)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or the equivalent (some college preferred)
- 3-5 years of training or experience in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment
- Arkansas Class B CDL with P and S endorsement
REPORTS TO: Transportation supervisor
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: A full contract for this position is 247 days with benefits as specified in the employee contract.
LOCATION: District Wide
Job Summary: Under general supervision, maintains and repairs fleet vehicles and small engines owned by the district. Identifies, diagnoses and repairs malfunctions in transportation vehicles and similar equipment for compliance with safety standards and operates specialized power tools to recondition complete sub-assemblies. Employee is also responsible for checking lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper function; performing engine and other sub-assembly checks
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates a safety mindset at all times
- Safe buses for students
- Safe working environment for fellow workers
- Monitor safe movements of school and activity buses while operating on public streets and highways
- Know and understand pertinent OSHA requirements.
- Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs malfunctions in transportation vehicles and similar equipment including checking for any worn components.
- Tests repaired equipment for compliance to safety standards
- Operaties specialized power tools to recondition complete sub-assemblies including:
- Pneumatic tools
- Brake lathe
- Bearing presser
- Tire machine
- Forklift
- Checks wiring systems for different electrical problems
- Checks and repairs all lights, switches, buzzers, and gages
- Repairs and replaces steering wheel and horn kid, headlights, brake lights, light covers, and bulbs
- Performs engine and other sub-assembly checks, repairs and/or replacement
- Repair buses and other school vehicles
- Order parts
- Provide emergency road service
- Perform preventative maintenance
- Refuels buses and checks fluids and tire pressure
- Help keep buses and shop area clean
- Serve as a bus substitute driver when needed
- Make certain buses are ready for inspection
- Test buses
- Maintain records of all parts used on bus maintenance
- Other duties as assigned.

The employee must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including welders and tire balancers etc. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles, including forklifts, buses and wreckers. Must be able to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of 50 to 100 pounds. stand, walk, and sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
