Mount Sinai Health System
York, NY Intern
POSTED ON 4/19/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/3/2026
Description

The Hemsley IBD research center and the Laboratory of Immunity and Tissue Regeneration at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai seeks an outstanding and highly motivated Senior Translational Research Scientist to lead and coordinate translational human immunology research focused on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact, patient-centered research at the interface of clinical investigation, laboratory science, and computational biology.

The successful candidate will play a central role in the design, execution, and oversight of translational studies integrating clinical cohorts, biospecimen collection and processing, multimodal molecular profiling, and cross-disciplinary data analysis. The individual in this role will work closely with clinicians, clinical research coordinators, laboratory scientists, computational biologists, data engineers, and institutional core facilities to support rigorous and innovative studies involving blood- and tissue-based human biospecimens.

This position will also involve interaction with external collaborators, including industry partners, and coordination of collaborative research studies across academic, clinical, and partner organizations. The role is ideally suited for a scientist who is excited by collaborative team science and motivated to advance biomarker discovery, translational insight, and therapeutic innovation in inflammatory disease.

Research Project Description

This position supports a portfolio of translational human immunology studies focused on the mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic response pathways underlying immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Projects involve the collection, processing, annotation, and analysis of human blood and tissue specimens from diverse clinical cohorts, together with the integration of clinical metadata and high-dimensional molecular profiling approaches. The work is designed to advance understanding of disease heterogeneity, identify clinically relevant biomarkers, and generate mechanistic insight that informs precision medicine strategies.

Technical Duties

The Senior Translational Research Scientist will oversee end-to-end study workflows linking clinical sample acquisition to downstream laboratory and computational analysis. Responsibilities include management of biospecimen processing pipelines, oversight of biobanking operations and sample inventories, development and maintenance of standard operating procedures, coordination of multimodal assays, and partnership with institutional immune monitoring and computational groups to support analytical pipeline development. The role also includes maintaining high standards of regulatory compliance for human studies, ensuring sample and data integrity, and coordinating collaborative study execution across internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners.

Goals and/or Outcomes of the Research Project

The overarching goal of this role is to establish and sustain a rigorous translational research infrastructure that enables mechanistic discovery in human inflammatory disease and accelerates progress toward clinical application. Expected outcomes include the generation of deeply annotated biospecimen and data resources, identification of biomarkers and pathways relevant to disease pathogenesis and therapeutic response, support for collaborative academic-industry research efforts, and dissemination of findings that may inform improved diagnostics and treatment strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and oversee complex translational research studies across diverse clinical cohorts of immune-mediated inflammatory disease.
  • Coordinate the clinic-to-laboratory research pipeline, including biospecimen collection, processing, annotation, storage, and transfer, in collaboration with clinical research coordinators and clinical teams.
  • Organize, maintain, and oversee sample biobank inventories across multiple translational studies, ensuring accurate tracking, quality control, and compliance.
  • Determine sample analysis strategies using multimodal technologies and coordinate analytical pipeline development with Mount Sinai Human Immune Monitoring Center(s) and related institutional core facilities.
  • Coordinate data generation, analysis, and interpretation with computational biologists, data engineers, clinicians, and laboratory scientists.
  • Interact with external collaborators, including industry partners, to support collaborative translational research efforts and study execution.
  • Coordinate collaborative research studies across academic, clinical, and partner organizations, ensuring alignment of workflows, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain research standard operating procedures, biospecimen repositories, and data inventory workflows in conjunction with data engineering partners.
  • Organize seminars, scientific discussions, and collaborative meetings to support dissemination of findings and advancement of translational research goals.
  • Make decisions and recommendations with substantial impact on translational research activities, including study design, biospecimen strategy, analytical workflows, and operational implementation.
  • Maintain and support human study approvals, regulatory documentation, and compliance related to human subjects research.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D in Biological Science or related field is strongly preferred.
  • 3 years minimum research experience (may include academic studies) with Masters; 5 years with a Bachelor’s. Prior Faculty background preferred. Supervisory experience of lower-ranked research personnel is preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in immune-mediated inflammatory disease, human immunology, translational biomarker studies, and cross-functional research coordination preferred. Experience managing collaborative projects involving academic, clinical, and industry partners is strongly preferred. Demonstrated organizational leadership and the ability to thrive in a highly collaborative translational research environment are highly desirable.
