About the Job

Mount Laurel Animal Hospital is seeking a  seeking a compassionate skilled, and detail-oriented Veterinary Technician to join our Ophthalmology team. This role is ideal for a technician who enjoys combining advanced technical skills with highly specialized patient care and wants the opportunity to continue learning and growing within veterinary ophthalmology. Our team manages a diverse caseload ranging from outpatient eye examinations and diagnostic testing to advanced surgical procedures. As the service continues to grow, we are looking for a technician who can work efficiently, stay organized, anticipate the needs of the doctor and patients, and confidently manage anesthesia cases.

Position Overview:

This role provides technical and nursing support for patients undergoing advanced diagnostics, procedures, treatments, and ongoing case management within the Ophthalmology service. This role works closely with internists, fellow technicians, assistants, and client service teams to ensure safe patient handling, accurate treatment delivery, thorough documentation, and excellent continuity of care.This individual will thrive in a specialty environment that requires critical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to balance hands-on patient care with detailed coordination and communication.

Once your shift begins, you will step into a fast-paced, team-centered hospital environment where your role truly matters. A typical day may include assisting with ophthalmic examinations and diagnostics, prepare patients for procedures, manage hospitalized or surgical patients, coordinate workflow with the Ophthalmologist, and provide anesthesia from induction through recovery. No two days are exactly the same, and this role requires someone who is comfortable balancing efficiency, attention to detail, technical skill, and excellent patient care. Throughout the day, you will help manage medically complex patients while serving as a knowledgeable and compassionate resource for both the clinical team and the families who trust us with their pets’ care.

This role is ideal for a technician who values meaningful client connection, thrives on organization and clinical detail, and takes pride in helping patients receive thoughtful, high-quality care during some of their most important visits.

Key Responsibilities 


• Assist the Ophthalmologist with examinations, treatments, procedures, and surgical cases


• Perform and assist with ophthalmic diagnostics such as Schirmer tear testing, fluorescein staining, tonometry, and other specialized testing


• Prepare patients, surgical areas, equipment, and supplies for ophthalmic procedures


• Safely calculate and administer medications under veterinary direction


• Place and maintain IV catheters


• Perform endotracheal intubation and assist with anesthetic induction


• Independently monitor anesthesia using ECG, blood pressure, ETCO₂, SpO₂, temperature, and other appropriate parameters


• Recognize anesthetic complications and appropriately communicate or intervene when patient status changes


• Manage patient recovery and provide appropriate post-operative nursing care


• Maintain complete and accurate anesthesia and medical records


• Properly operate and troubleshoot anesthesia machines, monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, and related equipment


• Provide clear client communication and patient discharge instructions


• Maintain organized treatment, procedure, and surgical spaces


• Work closely with doctors, technicians, assistants, and other specialty departments to maintain an efficient daily workflow


• Help support a growing Ophthalmology caseload while maintaining high standards for patient safety and quality of care

Qualifications


• Veterinary technician experience (2 years preferred)


• Strong anesthesia experience and the ability to independently manage anesthetized patients


• Strong knowledge of anesthetic monitoring, patient recovery, and recognizing changes in patient status


• Confidence with medication calculations, IV catheter placement, intubation, and perioperative patient care


• Excellent attention to detail


• Strong organizational and time-management skills


• The ability to maintain efficiency during a busy specialty caseload


• Strong communication and teamwork skills


• A willingness to learn specialized ophthalmic procedures and diagnostics
