Assistant Superintendent - Cemetery
Mt. Hope Cemetery Corporation is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Assistant Superintendent to join our team. The Assistant Superintendent will play a crucial role in the daily operations and maintenance of our beautiful and historic cemetery, ensuring the grounds are maintained to the highest standards and that all services are conducted with dignity and respect.
Responsibilities:
- Grounds Maintenance:
- Assist and participate in the planning, scheduling, and execution of all grounds maintenance activities, including mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, irrigation, lot mapping and snow removal.
- Supervise and participate in the maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
- Ensure the grounds are kept clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.
- Monitor and manage the health of turf, trees, and other landscaping.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
- Interment Services:
- Assist in the preparation and execution of interment services, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established procedures.
- Coordinate with funeral homes, families, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Supervise the placement of markers, monuments, and other memorials.
- Maintain accurate records of interments and plot locations.
- The Assistant will be on call every other weekend and as needed.
- Supervisory Duties:
- Assist in the supervision and training of grounds keeping and maintenance staff.
- Schedule and assign tasks to staff, ensuring efficient use of resources.
- Monitor staff performance and provide feedback.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of records, reports, and budgets.
- Respond to inquiries from families, funeral homes, and the public.
- Assist in the management of inventory and supplies.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of operational procedures.
- Must obtain a State of Maine Notary Certificate within 3 months of employment.
- Must be willing to operate the crematory when needed and obtain a Cremation Operators license within 3 months of employment.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure all cemetery equipment is properly maintained and safe to operate.
- Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunctions.
- Safety:
- Maintain a safe working environment for staff and visitors.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscaping, or a related field preferred.
- Proven supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of turf management and landscaping practices.
- Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of grounds keeping equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Sensitivity and respect for the needs of grieving families.
- Valid driver's license in good standing.
- Ability to use computer programs for record keeping and scheduling.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in cemetery operations and interment procedures.
- Knowledge of local regulations and ordinances related to cemetery operations.
- 3-5 Years of landscape experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, some in excess of 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
