PLC Programmer Technician

Primary Purpose of the Position

Design, program, troubleshoot, and repair industrial electrical and automation systems, including PLC-controlled equipment, to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of production equipment. The position supports cross-functional teams, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and ensures compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards in a manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Technical training preferred and/or minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Knowledge of industrial electrical control systems
• PLC programming and PLC troubleshooting knowledge
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals

Experience

• Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience maintaining and troubleshooting industrial manufacturing equipment
• Hands-on experience repairing electrical control systems, including:
• AC motors, servo motors
• Sensors (inductive, capacitive, reflective)
• Relays, VFDs, and control panels
• Experience with PLC-controlled equipment (Allen Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent)
• Experience troubleshooting pneumatic and electromechanical systems
• Experience using electrical diagnostic tools such as clamp meters, multimeters, and megohmmeters
• Experience supporting equipment startups, changeovers, or new equipment installations preferred.

Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities

• Maintain equipment operation in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner
• Troubleshoot and repair of electrical and automation-related issues impacting production, maintenance, sanitation, and warehouse equipment
• Analyze mechanical and operational problems and implement corrective actions
• Inspect used parts to determine dimensional and operational requirements
• Repair or replace defective electrical and mechanical components
• Install special functional and electrical parts in equipment and systems
• Analyze electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, and ladder logic to install, repair, calibrate, or replace electrical and electronic devices
• Test equipment after repairs, changeovers, or extended downtime to ensure proper operation
• Initiate purchase orders for replacement parts, tools, and equipment as needed
• Ensure adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety, quality, sanitation, employee safety, and environmental standards
• Maintain work area cleanliness and comply with 5S standards
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Core Competencies

Technical Skills

• Troubleshooting electrical systems (110VAC, 220VAC, 440VAC)
• Motor control circuits including starters, overloads, contactors, and relays
• Installation and troubleshooting of AC and DC electric motors
• Ability to read electrical schematics, ladder logic, and panel layouts
• Troubleshooting and basic programming of PLC-controlled equipment
• Experience with:
• Allen Bradley (Studio 5000, RSLogix, FactoryTalk)
• Siemens (TIA Portal, Step 7)
• Ability to monitor PLC logic, identify faults, and support program modifications
• HMI troubleshooting and basic modifications
• Knowledge of I/O modules, analog signals, and control devices
• Installation and troubleshooting of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
• Understanding of encoders, resolvers, and motor feedback devices
• Installation and calibration of industrial sensors (temperature, pressure, level, load cells, proximity sensors)

Soft Skills

• High level of mental and visual focus
• Willingness to work rotating shifts as required
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Physical and Behavioral Job Requirements

Physical

• Must be physically present at the assigned worksite
• Job requires standing for most of the shift
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs safely
• Manual dexterity required to repair and maintain machines
• Sufficient visual acuity (corrected) to read instructions, operateequipment, and visually inspect machinery
• Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb ladders, walk, and stand for extended periods.
