ABOUT MOTHER’S OUTREACH NETWORK

Mother’s Outreach Network (MON) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization rooted in racial justice and economic equity. We partner with, organize alongside, and work with Black mothers navigating the family policing system — primarily in Wards 7 and 8 — through direct legal representation, guaranteed income advocacy, and mother-led policy work. MON operates from the conviction that poverty is not neglect, and that every family deserves the tools to stay together and thrive. We are in an active period of organizational growth, building the internal infrastructure to match the scale of our ambition.

POSITION SUMMARY

MON is seeking a skilled, mission-driven Grassroots Community Organizer to lead grassroots outreach, mobilization, and base-building with mothers who have direct experience with the family policing system. This role builds collective power from the ground up — recruiting mothers into advocacy, developing their leadership, and advancing campaigns that dismantle the systems harming Black families in DC. The Grassroots Community Organizer grows MON’s base, deepens relationships across Wards 7 and 8, and leads the on-the-ground work that turns individual mothers into an organized, mobilized constituency.

This is not a case management, clinical, or direct service role. The Grassroots Community Organizer does not manage individual cases, provide therapeutic support, or function as an administrative coordinator. This is organizing work. The right candidate believes in people power and collective action as the path to change, and is energized by canvassing, recruitment, leadership development, and campaign-building — not by casework or office logistics.

The first months of this role follow a clear arc, but relationship-building, canvassing, and community presence run through every phase. Through the summer and into early fall, the focus is street-level recruitment and enrollment for MON’s Mother Up pilot — building trust with mothers door to door, at community events, and at resource fairs. As fall arrives, the focus shifts to Advocacy Day — mobilizing mothers, building the base for collective action, and growing MON’s public presence in the legislative season. By winter, the work centers on the DC budget fight — organizing mothers to make their voices heard. Throughout, the Grassroots Community Organizer works in close partnership with the Parent Peer Organizer and serves as staff support for Moms Empower.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Build and sustain authentic, long-term relationships with mothers with lived experience in the family policing system, organizing them into MON’s base and developing their leadership and advocacy skills
• Lead street-level outreach and canvassing — particularly in Wards 7 and 8 — to grow and deepen MON’s base
• Lead recruitment and mobilization of mothers into MON’s Mother Up pilot and other organizing initiatives
• Plan and execute MON-wide organizing events, including community convenings, advocacy actions, and coalition gatherings
• Staff resource and community fairs across DC to expand MON’s reach and build new relationships
• Develop and facilitate workshops, trainings, and peer leadership spaces for mothers engaged in MON’s organizing programs
• Engage with mothers using a trauma-informed, organizing lens — building power and leadership, not dependency
• Support mothers in developing testimony for DC Council hearings and other advocacy moments, as part of broader campaign mobilization
• Track outreach and organizing metrics (contacts, recruits, leadership development) to inform campaign strategy

QUALIFICATIONS

Must Have:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required
• Minimum of 2 years of community organizing and advocacy experience — base-building, campaign work, or grassroots mobilization in a racial justice, economic justice, or family rights context strongly preferred
• Demonstrated understanding of the difference between direct service and community organizing — and a clear commitment to the latter
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly across diverse audiences and settings
• Exceptional relational skills, with the ability to build trust and recruit mothers navigating crisis into sustained advocacy and leadership
• Deep commitment to racial justice, economic equity, and the dignity and self-determination of Black families
• Based in Washington, DC with ability to travel throughout the city, including on foot for street outreach and canvassing

Preferred:

• Demonstrated success recruiting, mobilizing, or developing the leadership of community members in a campaign or organizing context
• Trauma-informed training or equivalent experience working with individuals navigating crisis or system involvement
• Familiarity with the DC community and organizing landscape

Nice to Have: 

• Experience supporting guaranteed income, child welfare, or economic justice campaigns
• Experience supporting testimony development or legislative engagement processes
• Familiarity with the DC Council and DC government
• Experience with Little Green Light (LGL), Action Network, or similar CRM and organizing platforms
