Job Summary
The Driver safely and efficiently operates commercial motor vehicles to transport freight to customers. Deliveries are local with the driver ending their shift at the plant. The driver also serves as the face of Salt, effectively communicating with our customers to ensure customer satisfaction. The successful candidate should have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and a solid understanding of road safety regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Transport bulk or packaged materials by truck to make on-time deliveries for our customers. This includes driving a truck to specified destination, applying experience and knowledge of commercial driving regulations and roads in area.
- Complete all tasks in a safe manner complying with SOPs, company policies, and all laws/regulations. This includes complying with all DOT driver requirements.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections. Inspect the operating condition of the tractor and trailer(s) before and after trip, and when stopped enroute. Take reasonable and customary care for the reliability of the equipment. Report any defects to management to help identify maintenance issues before they lead to mechanical failures.
- Follow company procedures for properly and safely loading and unloading freight. Safely operate an industrial powered forklift to load and unload freight. Verify load against shipping papers.
- Complete all administrative and recordkeeping requirements as required.
- When not driving or completing driving-related activities, the driver may be assigned work in the warehouse. Load and unload freight in varying weather conditions at the company using the approved procedures and techniques.
- Take and verify dispatch instructions.
- Drop and hook trailer(s) and change the configuration of equipment as necessary. Connect air hoses and electrical lines, install, and manually crank dolly wheels.
- Maintain truck electronic logging device (ELD) logs according to state and federal regulations. Maintain telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive delivery instructions
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Safety sensitive position. Must work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Ability to work all scheduled hours, including overtime, various shifts, and days of the week.
- Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) licensing and physical requirements.
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, and maintain balance for extensive periods of time.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb, including ladders on the tractor and/or trailer(s) and frequently enter and exit the tractor cab.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks; stretch, turn, twist, and reach overhead; bend, crouch, squat, kneel and stoop for extensive periods of time.
Position Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with no Automatic Restriction.
- Must have a minimum of one year of tractor-trailer driving experience OR graduation from a recognized CDL training program.
- Must qualify to be insurable as a CDL driver.
- Must have the ability to read, write and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway and traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, read a bill of lading, and make accurate entries in daily driving log.
