SUMMARY
Sets up, adjusts, checks out programming, and operates NC/CNC lathes to perform a complex series of operations on a diversified line of work. Works to close tolerances and finish specifications requiring a high degree of skill, a broad knowledge of machining techniques and familiarity with NC/CNC operational procedures. Proceeds with minimum direction and supervision; instructions and guidance are provided on programming and operational difficulties. Work is subject to final inspection. Assists other Lathe operators with production/machine related questions and problems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Reads process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of part to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up, and operating requirements.
- Enters required information into computer bank.
- Mounts workpiece between centers, in chuck, or to faceplate.
- Selects and installs preset tooling in tool posts, turrets or indexing heads, and automatic tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet.
- Depresses buttons, or toggles to start machining operation.
- Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts.
- Enters data to override pre-programming to correct machine performance.
- Inspects first run piece and spot checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications.
- Studies job packet and organizes materials for next run during controlled cycles to shorten changeover time.
- Sets tools before positioning them in lathe.
- Sets up and operates another machine tool during machining cycles.
- Performs duties such as de burring, chamfering, antirust dip, and packaging during machine time.
- Performs duties of employees to be assisted.
- All other duties as assigned
