Position Summary

Morton Electric is seeking an experienced Automation Controls Engineer to design, program, troubleshoot, and support industrial automation systems for manufacturing customers across the Midwest.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI development, industrial control panel design, and commissioning automated equipment. This position is well-suited for a highly skilled controls professional who enjoys solving difficult technical problems, improving manufacturing performance, and working directly with customers.

An engineering degree is not required. However, verifiable experience with AutoCAD electrical design and PLC programming is required.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Design industrial automation control panels and electrical schematics using AutoCAD.
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs for automated manufacturing systems.
  • Program and support HMI applications and operator interfaces.
  • Commission, debug, and optimize manufacturing equipment and assembly lines.
  • Scale automation systems from prototype and pilot stages into full production environments.
  • Develop and maintain industrial data collection and visualization systems.
  • Configure and support platforms such as:
  • FactoryTalk View / RSView
  • Ignition
  • SCADA and Manufacturing Data Systems
  • Perform startup, troubleshooting, and field service support for industrial customers.
  • Support electrical controls upgrades, retrofits, and modernization projects.
  • Work closely with customers, electricians, maintenance personnel, and project managers to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Prepare project documentation, technical reports, and as-built drawings.
  • Assist with project estimating and proposal development when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience designing electrical control systems using AutoCAD.
  • Proven experience programming and troubleshooting PLC systems.
  • Strong understanding of industrial automation and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience reading and creating electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, controls, and automation issues in production environments.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking, communication protocols, and control architectures.
  • Ability to travel periodically to customer facilities throughout the Midwest.
  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work safely in industrial environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or other major PLC platforms.
  • Experience with FactoryTalk View, RSView, Ignition, Wonderware, or similar SCADA/HMI software.
  • Electrical estimating and project costing experience.
  • Industrial robotics integration experience.
  • Motion control and servo systems experience.
  • Experience supporting automotive, food processing, chemical, pharmaceutical, or heavy manufacturing facilities.
  • Technical certifications related to PLCs, controls, automation, or electrical systems.
  • Sales, business development, or customer relationship management experience.
  • Experience with industrial solar energy systems, energy management, or power distribution systems.
