JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Surgical Technician First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostatis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation. The First Assist functions in the scrub role and assists in the provision of care for the surgical patient during the intraoperative phase, doing so as a delegated technical function, under the direct supervision of the perioperative RN.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists surgeon in completing surgical procedure safely while serving in a technical function.
• Communicates with physicians, ancillary caregivers and co-workers regarding the procedural plan of care.
• Works under direct supervision of the surgeon to facilitate the procedure and process of surgery.
• Performs pre-op and post-op duties.
• Performs positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.
• Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.
• Demonstrates the proper use, care, application, and sterilization of specific surgical instruments and equipment.
• Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed by the surgeon.
• Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
• Collaborates with OR staff with timely set up and turn over of operating room.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on surgeon's preference.
• Performs wound closures as directed by surgeon.
• Assists in wound dressing and drainage placement as directed by surgeon.
• Assists with patient transfer and room turnover.
• Applies principals of asepsis and infection control skillfully.
• Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action.
• Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of professional practice and patient care and strives to manage situations in a reduced-risk manner.
• Maintains knowledge of equipment and continuously learns new technology and is able to trouble shoot equipment, report malfunctioning equipment and ensure its repair and return to service.
• Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of Morrison Community Hospital.
• Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Certification from an accredited First Assist program
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician program or 2 years surgical scrubbing experience.
• Must be BLS certified
• Experience preferred.
• Knowledge of Standard Precautions for exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens.
• Must possess excellent manual dexterity and demonstrate organizational and communication skills and be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
• Must maintain confidentiality, demonstrate compassion, empathy, and respect for all customers.
• Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills in a Windows environment.
• Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
• Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring.
