Morris County Hospital EMS is accepting application for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to work in our EMS department to provide critical medical care in emergency situations within their scope of practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: EMTs work under the direction of medical professionals and assist in stabilizing patients and transporting them to hospitals or healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to Emergency Calls:
    • Quickly and safely respond to emergency calls to provide pre-hospital emergency care.
    • Assess patients' medical conditions, including vital signs, symptoms, and injuries.
  • Provide Basic Medical Care:
    • Administer basic life support (BLS) procedures, including CPR, oxygen administration, bandaging, and splinting.
    • Assist with basic first aid and stabilization of patients until further medical care is available.
    • Monitor and record the patient’s condition and provide information to emergency room staff or medical professionals.
  • Transport Patients:
    • Safely transport patients to medical facilities while providing necessary care during transit.
    • Secure patients on stretchers and in ambulances using appropriate techniques.
    • Continuously monitor patient condition and respond to changes during transport.
  • Maintain Medical Equipment:
    • Ensure the proper functioning of medical equipment such as defibrillators, oxygen tanks, and first aid kits.
    • Stock and maintain supplies in the ambulance or emergency vehicle.
  • Assist with Medical Procedures:
    • Work under the guidance of paramedics or medical doctors to assist with advanced medical procedures.
    • Help paramedics with advanced airway management, medication administration, and other advanced interventions as required.

  • Communication and Reporting:
    • Maintain clear and accurate documentation of patient care and actions taken during the emergency.
    • Communicate effectively with other emergency services, including fire, police, and medical staff.
    • Report to hospital or medical personnel with patient condition updates upon arrival.
  • Provide Emotional Support:
    • Offer reassurance and comfort to patients and their families during emergency situations.
    • Remain calm and composed under stress, displaying professionalism.

Required Skills:

  • Strong Communication Skills: Clear, concise, and compassionate communication with patients, family members, and healthcare professionals.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess a patient’s condition quickly and make decisions under pressure.
  • Physical Stamina: EMTs often work in challenging and physically demanding environments, including lifting patients, moving stretchers, and working in emergency situations.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor vital signs and document medical conditions accurately.
  • Problem-Solving: Reacting quickly and efficiently to changes in a patient's condition.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with other emergency responders.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of an EMT training program (which typically lasts around 120-150 hours of coursework) and certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Licensing: State certification (requirements vary by state) and ongoing training for recertification.
  • Experience: Prior experience or volunteering in emergency response settings preferred, but OJT can be arranged.

Work Environment:

  • EMTs work in emergency vehicles (ambulances) and can be exposed to various environments, including accidents, natural disasters, medical facilities, or public events.
  • Shifts can be irregular, including nights, weekends, and holidays, due to the nature of emergency services.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May have to lift equipment or packages up to 50 pounds or more.
