Administer oral and topical medications to residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and wellbeing of the residents.
RMA - Essential Responsibilities:
- Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with community policy.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of “five rights” of medication administration. Administers and records all medication given to residents’ based upon their specific chart.
- May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
- RMA records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed.
- Observes and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately.
- Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
- Ensure antiseptic techniques and good hand washing practices for infection control, as well as utilizing universal precautions are in place and practiced.
- RMA reports and when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.
- Submit incident/accident reports to supervisor or Administrator within twentyfour (24) hours after their occurrence.
- Communicates with medical staff, nursing service and other department supervisors.
- RMA supervises care staff in absence of nurses.
- Maintains, cleans and organizes the Medication Room.
- Maintains a liaison with other department supervisors to adequately plan for resident activities.
- Attends all required training, in-service and staff meetings
- May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
- May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
- Maintain resident confidentiality, staff confidentiality; treat staff and residents with kindness, dignity and respect.
- Comply with Resident’s Rights rules.
- A High School Diploma or General Education Degree; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Medication Aide certification required.
