About the Role
We are currently seeking a highly motivated, driven, and collaborative Engineer to work on the development and optimization of Mori's patented reactor and purification process to extract silk protein from a naturally produced feedstock. This position is in-person with some opportunities to work on a hybrid basis depending on both project demands and personal performance.
- Independently plans projects on multi-month time scales based on company OKR and KPI structure, ensuring smooth workflow, balancing technical excellence with rapid timelines
- Supervises, scopes, and drafts study designs across Engineering with a focus on developing success criteria and project direction
- Significant personnel management responsibility managing associate and technician level employees including reviewing work, providing feedback, and furthering their professional and personal growth
- Crafting ongoing improvements to documentation, organization, standardization of methods
- Collaborating with operations teams including Food Safety/Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to develop and improve manufacturing process
- Generating high quality slide decks to present progress and research results as they relate to OKRs
- Authors and review technical documents such as reports, experimental plans, production batch records, training materials, and manufacturing SOPs per project needs at all scales
- Drives initial demonstration of new technology and equipment platforms
- Collaborates with others in capital projects during front-end design (Design Bases, PFDs, M&E Balances), PHAs, design reviews, commissioning, start-up and operator training for future plant builds

What You Will Bring
- Master’s degree plus 2-3 years of industry experience OR bachelor’s degree plus 4-5 years of industry experience in chemical engineering, bioengineering, materials engineering, or biochemistry
- Strong technical background in process development, technology transfer, and scale-up in biotech, pharma, or food technology field
- Experience with lab and pilot scale process equipment
- Experience with equipment design and prototyping
- Experience using and applying statistical data analysis methods such as design of experiments (DoE), gauge R&R, control charting, and multivariate analysis
- Excellent organizational, communication, and team building skills in a research environment
- Excels in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining a strong level of detail and organization
- Ability to stand and walk for the majority of your work day in a laboratory and plant setting and lift up to 40 pounds with or without assistance
- Ability to work flexible and off hours on an as needed basis
Bonus points if you have….
- cGMP compliant process experience in pharma or food
- Experience with stirred reactors and ultra-filtration
- Experience with protein or biopolymer extraction processing and analysis techniques
- Prior people management experience
Location, Schedule & Salary
- Based in Hood Park, Charlestown, MA
- On Site Requirements: 5 days a week with some opportunities for hybrid work based on team schedule, individual performance and business needs
- Salary: $90k-$110k annually depending on experience
