Position: Assistant Librarian-Youth Services

Supervisor: Library Director
Under direction of the Library Director, assists in the overall operations of the library which includes preparing library materials for circulation, planning and presenting youth programming, and assisting at the circulation desk. Provides close general supervision to Library Pages and volunteers as assigned.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Works at the circulation desk, checking items in and out, greeting patrons and assisting with requests. Assists patrons in locating books and materials.
- Processes interlibrary loan requests.
- Sorts and shelves library materials, helps to straighten and maintain shelves in call number order, identifies books and materials needing repair.
- Responsible for cataloging library items and new book preparation.
- Recommends Junior and Young Adult books and materials for purchase.
- Operates computer to catalog materials and enter patron data; assists patrons with public access computers and printers, as needed.
- Develops and presents innovative youth programs.
- Assists during other library programming (Summer Reading Program, Lego Club, Family Fun Night, etc.).
- Participates in outreach and social media to promote library programming and resources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing above or related duties preferred
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of library cataloging as well as library best practices.
- Proficiency working with computers, tablets, printers, as well as other electronics.
- Initiative in creating and promoting new youth library programs.
- Must be able to work well with the public, other staff members, and independently.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Comfortable working with patrons of all ages, especially teenagers.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Applicant will be subject to a background check
- Must be able to work evenings and Saturdays
Physical Demands: The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. This position requires regular walking throughout the library and minimal opportunities for seated work. The employee must have the ability to bend, reach, and move materials as needed to assist patrons and maintain the library environment.
Work Environment: The work is performed primarily within a library setting. The noise level is generally low to moderate, with frequent interaction with the public. The position requires mobility throughout the facility to assist patrons, access resources, and perform duties in various areas of the library.
