Description:

OR Pre-Op RN – PRN Days

About the Role:

The OR RN Pre-Op at Morgan Medical Center plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and comfort of patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position involves comprehensive preoperative assessment, preparation, and education of patients to optimize surgical outcomes. If needed, postoperatively, the nurse monitors patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), managing pain, vital signs, and potential complications to facilitate smooth recovery. The role requires close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Ultimately, the nurse contributes to efficient surgical workflow and enhances patient satisfaction through expert clinical practice and compassionate support.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments including reviewing medical history, medications, and allergies to prepare patients for surgery.
  • Provide patient education regarding surgical procedures, anesthesia, and postoperative care to alleviate anxiety and promote understanding.
  • If needed, monitor patients closely in the PACU, assessing vital signs, level of consciousness, pain, and potential complications following anesthesia.
  • Administer medications and interventions as prescribed to manage pain, nausea, and other postoperative symptoms.
  • Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure seamless patient transitions between pre-op, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
  • Document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely in the medical record.
  • Maintain a safe, sterile, and organized environment in both preoperative and PACU settings in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Skills:

The required skills enable the nurse to perform detailed patient assessments and deliver safe, effective care throughout the surgical experience. Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking are essential for identifying changes in patient status and responding appropriately in the PACU. Effective communication skills facilitate clear explanations to patients and collaboration with surgical teams, ensuring coordinated care. Proficiency with documentation and EHR systems supports accurate record-keeping and compliance with healthcare regulations. Preferred skills such as experience and patient focused care enhance the nurse's ability to manage complex cases and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
