THE POSITION Under direction, acts as project manager for complex mixed-use and residential development projects that require coordination among multiple City divisions and departments, along with other public agencies and private entities. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate for the Principal Planner position will be an experienced professional with a strong background in managing high-profile, mixed-use, and residential development projects. They will possess excellent project management and collaboration skills, enabling them to effectively collaborate with Departments and City Stakeholders. This proactive leader will be committed to community enhancement and diversity, ensuring alignment with the City’s policies and a focus on improving the quality of life for residents. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Principal Planner is responsible for serving as the key City project manager for multiple high-profile and large mixed-use and residential development projects. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating project activities and operations with other City departments and divisions, as well as external agencies/enterprises. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with division special projects as assigned. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies, procedures, and guide­lines. Principal Planner is distinguished from Planning Division Manager/Planning Official in that an incumbent in the latter class is responsible for planning, managing, organizing, directing, and integrating all the City’s planning programs, services, and staff. ABOUT THE PLANNING DIVISION The Planning Division recommends and implements land use policies, processes land use applications, and prepares and processes updates and revisions to the General Plan, Municipal Code, Landscape guidelines, and Design guidelines. This division provides staff support to the City Council, the Planning Commission, the Environmental and Historical Preservation Board, and the Development Review Team. ABOUT THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT The Community Development Department (CDD) provides a variety of development, business, and property owner services. CDD administers development review and project entitlement activities, performs long-range planning, and maintains the City’s General Plan. The department also performs building plan review, issues various permits, and performs inspections for new and altered projects. CDD manages a comprehensive community enhancement program that includes nuisance abatement and parking control among a host of other services. The department oversees the full-service operations for Animal Services, including animal care, adoption, and public safety.
