Job Summary
Summer Community Assistants, or CAs, serve as vital members of the Office of Student Housing, supporting students, staff, and guests residing in MSU housing facilities during the summer. As live-in staff, they foster a welcoming community within the summer residence hall, while serving as visible leaders and representatives of the university.
In this role, CAs provide a high level of customer service to guests and campus partners by facilitating housing check-in and check-out processes, responding to questions and concerns, and serving as knowledgeable resources for building, campus, and local services.
Summer Community Assistants serve in an on-call rotation for both residence halls and camps and conferences and respond to and help resolve emergencies, crises, and conflict situations. CAs collaborate with their residence hall team, including other Community Assistants and the Area Coordinator, to maintain a safe and supportive environment. Administrative responsibilities include working in the main Housing Office, completing necessary paperwork, and assisting with departmental projects to support overall housing operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitate check-in and check-out processes for students, conference groups, and guests in university residence halls.
- Provide customer service for university students, staff, and guests and serve as a resource for building, campus, and local services.
- Prepare and manage housing materials for campus, conferences, and guests; such as keys, sorting and distributing student mail, maintaining building signage, and check-in/out documentation.
- Maintain a visible and engaged presence through scheduled shifts, front desk coverage, and on-call rotations, including nights and weekends.
- Conduct routine facility checks to ensure cleanliness, safety, and security standards while on call.
- Respond to questions and concerns and serve as first-level responders to emergency and crisis situations in and around the residence halls and contact appropriate university and/or emergency response staff as needed.
- Enforce university and conference policies and procedures and submit documentation as necessary for any conflicts related to these policies and procedures.
- Complete all administrative documentation in a timely manner, including but not limited to, facilities work requests, room condition reports, and guest occupancy reports.
- Assist in conflict resolution among residents, including facilitating conversations and roommate mediations.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with university policies and applicable laws.
- Participate in required training sessions, staff meetings, and housing operations (including opening and closing).
- Provide administrative assistance in the Housing Office and support Housing Office operations, projects, and general administrative functions as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Decorate bulletin boards and maintain flyers and postings in the halls.
- The Community Assistant position is considered a 20-hour per week commitment during the time of employment.
- Community Assistant responsibilities begin the evening of May 9, 2026, and officially end on the evening of August 1st, 2026.
- Community Assistants will be required to attend training and orientation prior to the end of the Spring 2026 semester: date and time TBD.
- Community Assistants are expected to be available during summer session opening and closing periods. The required dates are: Sunday, May 10; Friday, June 5; Sunday, June 7; Thursday, July 2; Sunday, July 5; and Friday, July 31.
- Community Assistants will work 20 hours per week at a rate of $9 per hour.
- Community Assistants will be paid in accordance with the university pay schedule.
- Community Assistants will be provided with a single occupancy room or equivalent room in an assigned residence hall space.
- The Community Assistant is directly supervised by an Area Coordinator and indirectly supervised by an Assistant Director.
