Title: American Indian Liaison

Reports to: Superintendent

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: At-Will

Employment Group: NA


Salary Schedule:

This position will be based on need and coordinated with the Superintendent.

The hours will be up to 715 hours for the school year. Most hours will be used on students and staff days. Hours may vary on times and days, due to AIPAC meetings and other obligations.

Pay Range: $22.00-$25.00-Based on education and experience.


General Definition of Work
:

The American Indian Liaison will connect the school district, American Indian students and families, and tribal communities through communication and collaboration. The Liaison will support the academic, social, and cultural development of American Indian students. This position will work closely with our local American Indian Parent Advisory Committee AIPAC.


Preferred Work Experience:

  • Experience working with American Indian students and their families in an educational or community setting.
  • Experience working with tribal communities and organizations.
  • Experience in education, counseling, or social work.


Essential Functions:


Academic Support:

  • Monitor students’ academic progress and intervene as necessary to resolve challenges impacting their success.
  • Monitor students’ attendance and intervene as necessary to address challenges impacting their success.
  • Work with students and families to develop an individualized learning plan, as needed.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for American Indian Students.
  • Connect students with appropriate school and community resources.


Family and Community Engagement:

  • Serve as a liaison between the school district and American Indian families.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding academic progress, attendance, and other school-related matters.
  • Facilitate communication between school staff and American Indian families.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings, workshops, and events for American Indian students and families.
  • Work with tribal communities and organizations to support students and promote cultural understanding.
  • Manage and support parent involvement in the local American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC).


Cultural Awareness and Education:

  • Promote understanding and appreciation of American Indian culture within the school community.
  • Assist with professional development on American Indian history, culture, and educational issues.
  • Organize and participate in cultural events and activities.
  • Assist in the development of culturally relevant materials and curriculum resources.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of American Indian cultures, histories, and current issues relevant to local tribal communities.
  • Knowledge of the educational needs of American Indian students.
  • Familiarity with the Minnesota Department of Education’s American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) guidance, rules, and obligations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with students, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of educational resources and support services for American Indian students.
  • Ability to advocate for students and families.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and presentations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Apps Suite (Slides, Docs, Sheets), and other relevant technologies.
  • Ability to complete compliance plans, documents, and reports.


Education and Experience
:

  • High School Diploma.
  • An associate’s degree or equivalent will be considered.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of materials (up to 25 lbs).
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and reach to assist students and manage materials.
  • Frequent movement within the classrooms and school buildings.
  • Utilize sharp visual and auditory attentiveness to monitor students' behavior and comprehend communication.
  • Fine motor skills for tasks such as handwriting, utilizing digital tools, and managing instructional materials.
