POSITION TITLE: MFCS LowBoy Driver and Heavy Equipment Operator
REPORTS TO: Field Supervisor
SUPERVISES: None
SCHEDULE: M-F 7:00am – 3:30pm
SALARY: $ 40 Hourly (Non-Exempt)
CLOSE DATE: Open Until Filled
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the Field Supervisor’s supervision, The MFCS LowBoy Driver and Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of heavy equipment using a lowboy trailer and performing fuel reduction work for Mooretown Forestry Contract Services on both private and National Forest Land.
This position requires a high level of skill in operating commercial vehicles, loading and securing oversized and overweight loads, and complying with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations. This position also supports wildfire and emergency response operations. This position will be expected to operate different equipment when not driving LowBoy.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Safely load, unload, chain, and secure equipment such as excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, Log Processor, Timber Pro, Heal boom, Skidder and other.
2. Operate equipment according to Forest Service specifications for the project required.
3. Support wildfire suppression and emergency response efforts when assigned.
4. Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles, trailers, and cargo.
5. Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, weight limits, permit requirements, and company safety policies.
6. Maintain accurate driver logs, trip reports, inspection reports, and fuel records.
7. Coordinate with dispatch, job sites, and equipment operators to ensure timely deliveries and pickups.
8. Drive professionally in all traffic, weather, and terrain conditions.
9. Perform basic maintenance and report mechanical issues promptly.
10. Must wear required safety equipment at all times while working with Heavy equipment.
11. Must carry safety equipment at all times when required (shovel, fire extinguisher, hardhat).
12. Keep all equipment in safe working order (Check oil, grease machine check water, deff level if machine requires it daily).
13. All work is to be done according to Forest Service specifications usually done on avenza mapping system.
14. Maintain a safe distance away from other ground crew members working on the ground (watch for falling trees).
15. Must wear required safety equipment at all times while in the woods. Hard hats, Safety glasses, Ear protection.
16. Perform other duties as required. If a water tanker is needed for fire suppression It is the operator’s responsibility to keep it full of water and in working order.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
2. Current Red Card certification (or ability to obtain and maintain).
3. Clean driving record (MVR) with insurable status.
4. Minimum 5 years of experience hauling heavy equipment with a LowBoy or RGN trailer.
5. Strong knowledge of load securement, chaining, and heavy haul procedures.
6. Familiarity with wildfire incident command environments preferred.
7. Ability to read and understand permits, maps, and route restrictions.
8. Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency deployments.
9. Must pass DOT physical, drug and alcohol screening, and background check.
10. Must be at least 18 years of age.
11. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
12. Ability to climb on/off equipment and trailers.
13. Lift and handle heavy chains, binders, and tarps (up to 75 lbs).
14. Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, bending, and walking.
15. Must become familiar with the Forest Service hand held radio in case of emergency.
16. Ability to work as part of a team.
17. Must be in good physical condition.
18. Preference will be given to Native Americans (25 USC Sec. 472A).
19. Must have a valid California Driver’s License and be insurable on Mooretown Rancheria’s automobile policy.
20. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening, live scan/fingerprinting (DOJ/FBI).
