Job Title:  Substitute Teacher

 

Qualifications and Requirements:  High School Diploma required; Associate or Bachelor Degree preferred. Reports to:  School Administration (Principal and Assistant Principals) and District Administration

 

General Purpose of Position:

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, a substitute will help students learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms. Hours and days are as needed and will vary. Mooresville Graded Schools does not guarantee a minimum or maximum number of work days or hours for substitutes.

 

Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations:  

  • Maintains, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Collaborates with Instructional Assistants, Co-Teachers, Colleagues, and other Support Personnel in the instructional planning and delivery process to ensure student success.
  • Uses effective, efficient, and ethically appropriate oral and written expression when instructing students and communicating with all stakeholders.
  • Develops and follows through, in accordance with district and school guidelines, reasonable rules, procedures, and expectations as a “classroom management system” for students to learn and practice appropriate classroom behavior.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, school equipment, materials, and facilities from hurt, harm, and danger.
  • Shares in the responsibility of supervising students in all areas of the school facility on a daily basis and arranges for adult supervision of students when unexpected circumstances require a brief absence from classroom assignment.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and positive relationships with colleagues.
  • Works in partnership with school personnel and parents to strengthen the educational program for all children.
  • Communicates positively in public to all stakeholders about school and district educational programming.
  • Maintains appropriate and ethical work habits, including regular and punctual attendance, and abiding by the rules of the organization as public role models for students and the community.
  • Keeps all student records and information confidential in accordance with accepted professional ethics along with state and federal laws.
  • Upholds and enforces school board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules/regulations at all times in all situations.

Evaluation and Measurement of Performance:  All Substitute Teachers are evaluated informally and formally using classroom walkthrough tools, along with formal and informal observations by School Administration and Central Services Administration.


Terms of Employment:  Daily - Substitute Rate of Pay

 

Substitute Hiring Process

Application Review
May – September:  Applications are reviewed on a weekly basis.


October – April:     Applications are reviewed on a monthly basis.


Interviews
May – September: Candidate interviews are conducted twice per month.


October – April:     Candidate interviews are conducted once per month.


Training
May – September: New substitute training sessions are offered twice per month.


October – April:     New substitute training sessions are offered once per month.


*This schedule allows us to meet the increased demand for substitutes at the beginning of the school year while continuing to provide opportunities for candidates year-round. Please note that applicants must successfully complete all three steps—application review, interview, and training— as well as the MGSD pre-hiring process before being approved to serve as a substitute.
