Job Title: Grounds Technician
Qualifications: High School Diploma (or equivalent), valid North Carolina Driver's License and evidence of liability insurance. Special Considerations: Able to show license and/or certifications within the Grounds/Maintenance fields of expertise.
Reports to: Director of Maintenance
Supervises: N/A
Purpose of Position: To create and provide a safe, clean, orderly and cost effective support to our school system's staff and students. The job of Grounds is established for the purpose/s of providing ground services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; installing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading grounds equipment, assisting other skilled trades; ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site.
Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations:
- Cuts lawns and other designated areas
- Removes damaged leaves, branches, or twigs
- Sprays lawns, plants, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides, using hand or automatic sprayer.
- Conditions and prepares soils and transplants or plants seeds, seedlings or bulbs according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area.
- Waters lawns, shrubs, and flowers
- Maintains paths or road surfaces
- Performs ground maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments such as, mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, snow removal equipment; operates heavy power equipment.
- Drives dump trucks and transports tractor and ground maintenance equipment.
- Makes minor repairs and service on mowers and other equipment.
- Ability to use, sharpens, and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
- Working knowledge of grounds keeping and elementary horticultural practices.
- Working knowledge of planting, cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs and trees.
- Uses the computer work order system.
- Grades driveways, drainage areas and clears sites.
- Haul mulch, gravel and equipment as required.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
- Receives training and in-service pertinent to the job function.
- Performs other functions as assigned by Director of Maintenance and/or Grounds Manager.
Evaluation and Measurement of Performance: Each employee is evaluated and measured for performance on an annual basis, by the Director of Maintenance. Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
Terms of Employment: 12 months
