Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated successful completion of a braille certificate program. (Please refer to the Exceptional Children Division page on the NC Department of Public Instruction website for a list of braille programs.)
  • Considerable knowledge of standard technologies and equipment typically used for the production of embossed and electronic braille materials for the visually impaired
  • Working knowledge of elementary and secondary level subject content
  • Those qualifications required under the provisions of "No Child Left Behind":
  • Associate degree, or
  • Completion of 48 semester hours of college credits, or
  • Successful completion of a series of WorkKeys assessments plus earn 96 contact hours of appropriate staff development


Essential Job Functions:

  • Decodes and transcribes materials into braille and assists students with access to educational materials in braille, embossed or refreshable
  • Transcribes classroom and supplementary materials into braille
  • May register and serve as an Accessible Materials Producer (AMP) through the State NIMAC Coordinator
  • Tutors students in the use of braille in reading, writing and arithmetic
  • Reviews student work completed in braille for accuracy of the code
  • Problem solves regarding braille materials
  • Prepares corresponding printed text of braille work for student's team members
  • Assists the Teacher of the Visually Impaired in gathering progress monitoring data
  • Attends IEP meetings and other meetings as needed in which educational programs for visually impaired students are planned and materials are reviewed
  • Works in direct collaboration with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.


Must be able to:

  • walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, key requiring repetitive motions
  • use visual acuity in preparing and analyzing written or computer data
  • visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job specific equipment and tools

  • hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels, receive detailed information through oral communications and make fine distinctions in sound.
  • communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
  • communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • demonstrate considerable knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • have skill to accurately and efficiently transcribe materials into braille
  • establish and maintain positive relationships to effectively collaborate and work with students and teachers
  • ability to plan and organize work
