The Opportunity

Moonlight Basin is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, modify, and repair light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road maintenance equipment, ensuring our entire fleet remains in safe operating condition. You will diagnose, service, and repair the systems found on heavy equipment — including transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems — across vehicles and equipment such as snowplows, dump trucks, dozers, excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, skid steers, 4x4 trucks, snowblowers, and small tractors with various attachments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems, including gas and diesel engines, brakes, drivetrains, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, GPS, and cooling systems.
• Diagnose equipment components for defects or malfunctions using a wide range of testing equipment.
• Work on vehicles and equipment such as single- and tandem-axle trucks, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, front-end loaders, excavators, motor graders, and small tractors.
• Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and overhaul systems and parts.
• Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional.
• Design and fabricate equipment such as mounting brackets, special tooling, and other small fabrication projects using welders, torch sets, plasma cutters, and metal cutting saws.
• Perform routine maintenance checks, inspections, and adjustments, including fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, and tires; change filters and oil; and lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment.
• Maintain service logs and detailed records of maintenance on all vehicles and equipment using fleet management software.
• Complete annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet.
• Prepare work orders and cost estimates, and road test vehicles and equipment following repairs.
• Maintain technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials, and adapt to new technology and updates.
• Instruct operators in the proper use and care of vehicles and equipment.
• Keep tools, equipment, and the work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
• Respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or job-related vocational training required.
• Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as tandem-axle trucks, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, and wheel loaders.
• Completion of a formal apprenticeship program, or relevant post-high-school coursework in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics, may be substituted for the required experience.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
• ASE Certification (Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, or HVAC) preferred.
• Heavy Equipment Repair and Operations Certificate a plus.
• Comfortable using computers for vehicle diagnostics, data entry, record keeping, and email; ability to quickly learn new software.
• Mechanics are expected to have their own tools needed to perform the essential duties of this position.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in the shop, with additional time spent in the field. The role requires responding to emergencies outside of regular work hours, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and some on-call time. Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods, loud noises, and fumes, odors, gases, or dust that may affect breathing, eyes, or skin.

Employees must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and radio to relay information and respond to field calls, and must use computers to complete everyday work duties, including fleet management software and email.

Physical Requirements

• Required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Required to bend, kneel, crouch, and climb in and out of trucks and equipment when performing maintenance and repairs.
• Required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to grip and manipulate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms for extended periods.
• Required to operate company vehicles and equipment as needed for daily operations.
• Required to wear protective or safety equipment, such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, or hard hats.
• Requires specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Requires the ability to hear and distinguish a range of sounds, including alerts, alarms, and equipment noise, with or without hearing protection.
• Must be able to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively with others.
• May work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions, or outdoors in conditions subject to changes in temperature, wind, and precipitation.
• Must maintain a well-groomed, professional appearance.
