Staff Accountant - Downtown Galveston

Responsible for assisting Controller by performing a variety of accounting duties and maintains the Bank’s fiscal records keeping system by utilizing generally accepted accounting principles. Assures compliance with all Bank policies and procedures as well as all applicable state, federal, banking regulations, tax laws and assist with attaining Bank/Department goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Gathers and calculates data and prepares a variety of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for management; ensuring reports are accurate, complete, and prepared on schedule.
• Assist the Controller in ensuring accurate completion of related financial reports initiated by the Bank’s data processor along with internal reports.
• Perform daily and monthly general ledger account reviews and reconciliations.
• Perform fixed asset accounting and depreciation and prepaid asset amortization.
• Serve as oversight for maintaining the accounts payable system and process the bank’s accounts payable using the Banktel system. Monitor the coding for general ledger accuracy.
• Compile miscellaneous month end accounting and general ledger entries from general ledger reports and other internally maintained accounting systems and schedules.
• Maintain advance knowledge and awareness of financial industry status and trends.
• Provide support to all assigned areas in the department where service or assistance is needed.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience: 2 years financial accounting and/or related background.

Skills and Abilities Required:

Basic knowledge of related state and federal banking compliance regulations, and other Bank operational policies. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. General banking experience, methods, and procedures related to Federal Funds transactions and bank account or general ledger reconciliation. Intermediate skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation; Fedline terminal; word processing and spreadsheet software programs. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions, interpret documents, understand procedures, write reports and correspondence, and speak clearly to customers and employees. Ability to deal with and research difficult problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations. Effective organizational and time management skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision while performing duties. Knowledge of general accounting, payroll, budgeting and related accounting and record keeping systems in a financial institution. Advanced math skills; ability to calculate interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages; balance accounts; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; locate routine mathematical errors; compute rate, ratio, and percent, including drafting and interpretation of bar graphs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist auditors
• Other special projects as required.
• Cross-train with other department personnel; assume responsibility for various department functions in the absence of staff members or in overload situations.
• Will perform other duties associated with the Bank's general ledger accountants.
