Position Purpose
Montgomery School seeks a Director of Development to drive the success of the school’s development and fundraising efforts.
The Director of Development is responsible for leading and executing the school’s philanthropy and engagement strategies. This leadership role works closely with the Advancement Team, Board Advancement Committee, and Head of School to cultivate relationships, secure financial support, and oversee all fundraising initiatives. The Director of Development plays a key role in donor stewardship, strategic planning, and advancing the school’s mission through strong community engagement.
The Director of Development is a member of the administrative team and reports directly to the Head of School.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of philanthropy and engagement for the school, including the annual fund, Educational Improvement Tax Credit program, and major gifts.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, corporate partners, and foundations to expand the school’s donor base.
- Create and manage portfolio of major donors and prospects
- Develop and implement long-term fundraising strategies to increase donor participation and revenue.
- Work directly with the Board of Trustees and the Board Cultivation Committee to achieve short and long term school fundraising goals.
- Hire, manage and direct consultants and vendors that participate in fundraising, including capital campaigns, grant writing, event planning, and other specific projects
- Oversee goal setting, evaluation, and reporting of development, alumni relations, and donor recognition programs.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, and community friends, to foster financial support and fundraising outreach.
- Partner with the Head of School on prospect management, donor relations, and stewardship, including meeting regularly to review prospect lists and establish action plans.
- Develop strategies for planned giving and endowment growth.
- Work collaboratively with the Advancement Team to enhance donor engagement and community outreach efforts.
- As a member of the Advancement team, lend leadership and support for admissions, parent engagement, and other advancement-related initiatives.
- Supervise and support the Development Support Officer, ensuring effective execution of development-related tasks, database management, and event logistics.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional development opportunities that support the school’s advancement efforts.
- Actively promote outdoor learning, character education, inclusion and belonging, and student focus on authentic engagement
- Other duties as assigned which support the mission and high functioning of the school.
Candidate Requirements:
Administrators should have appropriate education and experience for their desired position. College and Graduate study in business or accounting preferred. Previous work in advancement functions, including fundraising and development, is preferred. Experience with fundraising related software is desired. Ability to communicate effectively with Board members, faculty and staff, parents, students, and communities which surround and interact with the school. An interest in thinking boldly, solving creatively, and leading compassionately in the service of children will be rewarded in our process.
