STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Ensures the accuracy and completeness of patient account files for appropriate billing distributions. Processes statements, monitors outstanding account balances, refunds credit balances and initiates the collection process so as to fairly present the hospital’s accounts receivable and to maximize reimbursement on accounts. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES E M NI
1. Monitors the status of outstanding accounts and identifies those past due. Responsible for making telephone calls to patient on self pay balances. Discusses significant overdue problem accounts with the Business Office Manager to ensure prompt follow-up and resolution. Handles all incoming calls for self pay balances.

2. Reviews and concludes monthly aged trial balance on self pay portions for submission to Business Office Manager at month end.

3. Reviews and concludes weekly all accounts pending receipt of Final Notices.

4. Reviews and concludes weekly all accounts pending replacement with an outside collection agency.

5. Reviews patient account files for accuracy and completeness of all documents and correspondence relating to return mail, hospital charity, bankruptcies, attorneys, etc.

6. Receives and courteously answers inquiries from patients, insurance companies, Medicare, and other parties regarding charge and/or billing discrepancies.

7. Reviews and completes weekly self pay credit balance report.

8. Identifies and concludes all patients that may warrant Hospital Charity Care. Process application, makes the final decision of approval and puts through transaction for adjustments.

9. Indentifies and concludes all process for CMS billing and follow-up.

10. Maintains charity logs for Medicare and commercial/self pay accounts.

11. Maintains all bad debt logs and all bad debt recovery logs.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. The Billing Clerks must have a working knowledge of Business Office machinery, be proficient in computer usage, and understand the various types of insurance coverage’s and their requirements. Must have the prior billing experience necessary to efficiently work patient accounts in order to maintain accurate billings and current collections. Must be familiar with hospital policies and procedures. Must also demonstrate good communication skills including sensitivity to patient needs of a wide variety of age groups.
