Blacksburg High School


The Head Custodian is responsible for supervising the custodial staff and maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities. They assign duties and responsibilities, and ensure that each shift completes work assignments. In addition, they ensure that the rest of the custodian staff is well versed in proper handling of all chemicals and machinery. Additionally, Head Custodians are responsible for all paperwork, such as inventories, budgets, and activity sheets.


LICENSURE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:


Licensure/Certifications:

  • Valid Virginia driver’s license


Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or a passing score on the MCPS literacy test


Experience:

  • Two years experience in custodial or general maintenance work
  • Experience reading and applying basic operating instructions for custodial equipment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to multi-task, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual


Desirable:

  • Previous supervisory experience


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Supervisory Duties

  • Assigns duties to each shift
  • Adheres to team cleaning approach
  • Trains custodians to perform job in a safe and productive manner
  • Teach employees about product safety features
  • Communicates with staff through the use of a 2-way radio
  • Maintains grounds
  • Receives shipments
  • Mediates problems which may arise between the custodial staff and other school personnel
  • Makes a daily inspection in order to be aware of any maintenance work, which must be addressed before school begins
  • Sets a schedule for when areas must be cleaned
  • Evaluates employees
  • Resets time clock when necessary
  • Responds first when the burglar alarm is sounded
  • Inspects equipment closets to ensure they are stocked

Custodial Duties

  • Ensures building is prepared for occupation (e. g. heat on, doors unlocked, and the building is clean)
  • Prepares building for after-hours events
  • Maintains safe environment during inclement weather (e. g. shovels walks and lays out extra rubber mats)
  • Replaces burned out light bulbs
  • Maintains lockers in working condition
  • Sets new locker combinations at the beginning of each school year
  • Delivers shipments to appropriate people
  • Marks sports fields
  • Keeps loading dock clean
  • Fixes broken furniture
  • Raises and lowers the flag, as necessary
  • Installs pencil sharpeners
  • Lifts heavy items for kitchen workers
  • Repairs kitchen equipment when possible
  • Follows up on repairs being completed by outside personnel
  • Ensures playing fields are watered during the summer

Administrative Duties

  • Ensures employee time cards are properly punched
  • Maintains quality inspection sheets to ensure work is being properly completed
  • Schedules equipment needed from the library
  • Completes inventory of supplies, equipment, and furniture
  • Completes activity sheets
  • Prepares an annual budget
  • Prepares long-range plans for building maintenance and repair
  • Documents leave for employees
  • Completes time sheets for hourly workers
  • Documents absences of hourly workers
  • Turns in employee payroll sheets on time
  • Maintains a log of work requests (e. g. who requested, who was assigned, and when work was completed)


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, twist, use a ladder, and reach for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate effectively – use of expressive and receptive skills
  • Lift or carry materials up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to push or pull or exert force frequently
  • Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations
  • Must possess physical and mental capability for the sole supervisory responsibility of public school students

SALARY: $36,383.68 - $70,898.14 annually, with benefits; commensurate with experience and prorated to start date
