Position Overview

Under the direction of the WIC Program Breastfeeding Supervisor, the Breastfeeding Peer Helper is responsible for providing education and assistance with breastfeeding to support a healthier community.

Summary of Job Duties

  • Assisting the WIC Dietitians/Lactation Consultants with the following: 1. Providing breastfeeding support and information to pregnant and breastfeeding women through phone contacts, mailings, clinic visits, and occasional home visits, 2. Group classes, and 3. Data collection for evaluation purposes
  • Demonstrating both individual and program accountability by obtaining, establishing and maintaining accurate, legible, appropriate, and thorough documentation for each client and the program(s).
  • Referring clients to Dietician/Lactation Consultant when appropriate; Serving as a resource person to WIC staff
  • Collaborating with the WIC Health Professional/Breastfeeding Consultant, conducting breastfeeding support meetings
  • Managing or assisting with the management of a breastfeeding resource library; Maintaining and displaying breastfeeding material in the clinic waiting room
  • Providing input for the development of educational materials
  • Maintaining equipment and supplies necessary to perform daily activities

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Six (6) months personal breastfeeding experience
  • Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others.
  • Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibited
  • Required to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours
  • Completion of Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 courses within 90 days of hire
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work
