WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

MCDOT seeks a Public Service Worker III (Download PDF reader), Grade 12, for its Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations experienced in the maintenance and repair of County roads and property, including operation of 10,000 - 15,000 GVW trucks (and over 26,000 GVW trucks in the Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations), tractor mowers and similar vehicles, some with power take-off equipment. This class of work may entail some public service/assistance, but it is incidental to the primary focus of the work performed.

What You'll Be Doing

In the Public Service Worker III, Grade 12, position, the employee will be assigned to the Signing & Marking crew and will assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings on County roadways. Tasks and Duties include:

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings on County roadways
  • Safely operate signing and marking vehicles
  • Use various signing and marking tools and equipment
  • Assist with fabrication of traffic signs
  • Perform field layout of pavement markings
  • Regularly handle a 75-pound post driver

Work Expectations

  • Work as part of a crew with minimal instruction from lead or supervisory staff
  • Perform tasks previously learned with little or no supervision

Physical Requirements

  • Work outdoors for long periods in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • Frequent bending, reaching, stretching, lifting, stooping, climbing, and crouching
  • Work in cramped or awkward positions as needed
  • Regular physical effort involving pulling, pushing, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional heavy physical effort involving items over 75 pounds

Work Environment and Conditions

  • Work close to heavy traffic and around moving machinery
  • Operate power tools and equipment with associated hazards
  • Required use of safety gear such as special safety shoes, hard hats, ear protection, and/or respiratory masks
  • Regular exposure to severe weather, grease, dirt, muck, run-off, storm drains, catch basins, asphalt, and other bituminous products
  • Exposure to noxious fumes, strong odors, high dust levels, and similar environmental discomforts

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of manual labor experience.

Education: Ability to read and write in English and carry out simple written instructions.

Equivalency: None.

Physical Ability:

  • Ability and willingness to perform work for prolonged periods in severe weather.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort for prolonged periods and heavy physical effort for limited periods, to work in and around traffic, and wear personal protective gear and apply safety precautions.
LICENSE: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence when required for job-related duties.

Medical Exam Protocol: This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, which includes a physical examination and drug screening.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Individuals appointed to this class will be required to serve a probationary period of six (6) months, during which time performance will be carefully evaluated. Continuation in this class will be contingent upon successful completion of the probationary period.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

We will use interview preference criteria:

  • Experience fabricating and/or installing highway signs.

  • Experience installing various pavement marking materials.

  • Experience operating power tools and construction equipment/machinery

  • CDL not required, but preferred and necessary for advancement within the County’s Sign Shop
