About the Position

The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $98,806 to $138,000, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Montgomery County Government, Office of Human Resources is seeking an advanced-level clinical psychologist to provide direct clinical services to Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) personnel and their families.

This position is located in Montgomery County, MD, a large suburban county outside of Washington D.C. with approximately 1 million residents. The Stress Management Team (SMT), organizationally situated in the Office of Human Resources (OHR), promotes the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) employees and their immediate family members. The MCPD employs approximately 2,000 sworn employees and professional staff.

The Psychologist will provide an array of mental health services and will be supervised by and work closely with the Psychologist Supervisor to perform the duties listed below, and together they provide oversight and supervision to the MCPD Peer Support Team.
The Psychologist will interface with police department personnel at all levels, county agency personnel, civilian and police union representatives, state, and local agencies as well as local and national providers of mental health services.

What You'll Be Doing

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing routine and emergency mental health assessment, intervention, referral, and case management services in individual, couple, group, or family formats
  • Providing initial and follow-up support of personnel involved in critical incidents, including on-scene response
  • Collaborating with diverse stakeholders across government agencies and community partners to assess needs, provide expert psychological consultation, and support coordinated service delivery
  • Developing curriculum and providing training on psychological and stress management topics for police recruits, new call-takers/dispatchers, supervisory and in-service training, the Peer Support Team, and specialized units. Training includes stress management, substance abuse, critical incident reactions, resilience, suicide awareness and prevention?
  • Providing subject matter consultation, in-service programming, and outreach in support of departmental initiatives
  • Documentation of services utilizing a client records management database/electronic health records system, ensuring confidentiality of client information
  • Providing organizational and workgroup assessments
  • On-call duties and supervision of the Peer Support Team activities while on-call
  • Conducting and evaluating research
  • Selection, supervision, and training of masters- and doctoral-level psychology interns
This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative style of working with others, and a strong ability to maintain boundaries. The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a medical exam, drug screening, and a comprehensive background check.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of post-doctoral experience in clinical therapeutic practice. Experience working with law enforcement populations, first responder or military populations preferred.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctoral degree in Psychology as defined in Title 18, Health Occupations Article, Section1-101(g) Annotated Code of Maryland.

Equivalency:
None.

License:
Licensure as a Psychologist by the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists by the date of appointment to a County Psychologist position.

Note:
There will be no substitutions for the license.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

Preference for interviews will be given to qualified candidates with experience in the following areas. Be sure to include applicable experience in your resume.

  • Experience working with law enforcement populations, first responder or military populations.
  • Experience administering any specific psychological interventions to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Experience providing psychological services within a complex legal/regulatory/organizational environment.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention on-scene to public safety employees.
  • Experience providing a variety of therapeutic interventions (e.g., crisis intervention; individual, couples, family, and group therapy; skills training; and brief interventions) using multiple treatment modalities.
  • Experience developing curriculum and providing training on psychological and stress management topics.
  • Experience in providing psychotherapy to a diverse population with a range of diagnoses and mental health functioning.
