What You'll Be Doing
- Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, physical, psychological, drug and alcohol screening.
- Candidates will be provided with information via email with instructions and information to schedule their own test date after applications have been reviewed and eligibility requirements met.
- Prior to becoming a sworn Deputy Sheriff, Deputy Sheriff Candidates are responsible for attending and successfully completing an extended curriculum of instruction that prepares an employee to work in any one of a variety of assignments in the Office of the Montgomery County Sheriff. A Deputy Sheriff Candidate receives a comprehensive, six (6) months of training through a recruit training program.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: None.
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.
Other requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age at the time of obtaining sworn Deputy Sheriff Status (Completion of the training academy).
- Must be a United States Citizen.

Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade will be placed on the Eligible List as a "Lateral Transfer" candidate and may be considered for an interview.
This will establish an Eligible List that may be used to fill both current and future vacancies.
