Position Overview

Full performance level in the building and electrical inspection occupations requiring considerable knowledge of construction and electrical installation methods, along with associated regulatory requirements. Under direction of building official, conducts inspections of construction projects and electrical installations to ensure compliance with approved drawings.

Summary Of Job Duties

On-site, the building and electrical inspector conducts rough, pre-heat, and final electrical safety inspections of buildings and structural wiring to assess adequacy and safety of installations. All discrepancies identified during inspections are documented, and the inspector advises builders, contractors, and homeowners on code violations. The inspector certifies compliant installations for public utility connections and responds to inquiries and complaints related to electrical safety standards. The inspector ensures compliance with building codes at construction sites for residential, commercial, and industrial structures. This includes checking structural and safety components such as footings, framing, fire walls, stairways, exits, window and door sizes, lighting, HVAC systems, retaining walls, sprinkler systems, kitchen hoods, paint booths, and swimming pools. The inspector also performs visual inspections and pressure testing of gas piping systems through the use of meters, recorders or other approved devices, ensuring compliance with the approved construction documents. All inspectors shall inspect the work to the extent of the approval given when construction documents were approved by the building official and for which the inspection was requested. All inspectors shall effectively communicate the results of their inspections to the applicant and building official.

The inspector interacts with architects, contractors, homeowners, attorneys, fire marshals, and zoning officials to address non-conformance issues and recommend corrective actions. Responsibilities include preparing detailed reports, issuing citations or stop-work orders when necessary, and maintaining accurate permit records and inspection logs. The inspector also engages in ongoing professional development through seminars and trade group meetings to stay current with code updates and industry standards.

Responds to inquiries from builders, contractors, and the general public regarding building and electrical requirements; investigates complaints involving violations of building and electrical

code and/or safety standards; and participates in trade group meetings to discuss code updates and related issues.

Minimum Qualifications And Requirements

Equivalent to a high school diploma. Must currently possess Level 3 Building Inspector (BI, EN, FPI, MI) certifications, and Level 3 Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI) certification, all issued by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards, or must possess Level 3 Building Inspector (BI, EN, FPI, MI) certifications and be eligible to obtain interim certification(s) for Level 3 Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI), issued by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards, within six (6) months of hire date.

Must maintain a current, valid United States driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Supplemental Information

Must maintain certification and attend ongoing professional development through seminars and trade group meetings to stay current with code updates and industry standards.

Unusual Working Conditions- Exposure to unfavorable weather and driving conditions; hazards associated with a construction site environment.

All Montgomery County employees become members of the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and have access to deferred compensation programs.

Part-Time Employees (Benefits Eligible) (scheduled 21 hours per week): Health insurance with HSA match, wellness program and incentives, life insurance, paid personal leave days, sick leave, holiday pay for hours scheduled to work on holidays, and access to dental, vision, short-term disability, accident & critical care benefits.

Part-time Employees (Non-Benefits Eligible) (20 hours or less per week): Benefits include Long Term Sick Leave Accrual, Paid Personal Leave, and holiday pay for hours scheduled to work on holidays.

Seasonal Employees: Benefits include Sick Leave accrued at 4.6 hours for every eighty 80 hours in active

pay status. Seasonal employees scheduled to work 40 hours during their period of employment will accrue vacation in the same manner as regular full-time employees and can use their vacation after completion of twenty-six (26) bi-weekly pay periods in active pay status. Part-time Seasonal employees (scheduled to work less than 40 hours) do not accrue vacation.

Intermittent and Temporary Employees: Long-Term Sick Leave accrual is based on hours worked.
