Swim Instructor I

The Y is a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. This position
provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. 

NOTE: YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE TO RECEIVE CONSIDERATION FOR THIS POSITION.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following YMCA lesson plans accordingly. Employment contingent on successful completion of YMCA course work. 
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. 
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate, refers students and parents to other programs. 
• Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.). 
• Attends staff meetings and training courses as scheduled. 
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. 
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment. 
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned. 
• Assist in all areas, completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor.
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
• Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants. 
• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.

 QUALIFICATIONS: 

• YMCA Swim Instructor certification. If associate is American Red Cross WSI certified than willingness to crossover to YMCA Swim Instructor within 90 days of employment. 
• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Oxygen Administration, & Basic First Aid certification. 
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards. 
• At least 16 years of age. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. 
• Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds and to lift a small to average size child. 
• Ability to stand for long periods of time. 
• Must be in good physical condition to teach classes.
• Must have ability to work inside and outside (i.e., humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions). 
• Must have ability to concentrate in a loud environment.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $16.13
