What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upper School English Teacher position at Montclair Kimberley Academy?
Montclair Kimberley Academy, an innovative PK – 12 independent day school seeks a full-time teacher in the Upper School for the 2026-27 school year to teach a variety of courses ranging from ninth and tenth grade year-long English courses as well as junior and senior English department electives. Responsibilities include teaching four sections of English and serving as an advisor to a group of approximately ten students. Qualified applicants will meet the following criteria:
- Possess a BA or higher in English literature, MA preferred.
- Demonstrate experience teaching high school students.
- Implement a diverse range of instructional strategies for a student-centered approach in the 70-minute block period.
- Teach a range of courses within an innovative high school English curriculum.
- Invest in our commitment to multicultural education by teaching texts and introducing units that examine race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and religion.
- Demonstrate careful consideration of the ethical challenges and opportunities posed by AI, and a commitment to ongoing examination of the impact of this emerging technology.
- Show commitment to helping students one-on-one outside of the classroom.
- Demonstrate the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying learning styles and levels of ability. Experience teaching AP courses is preferable.
- Help to cultivate a culture of student reading outside the classroom.
- Have a strong interest in working with students as an advisor and as an extracurricular activity sponsor or coach.
Candidates should possess outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of a collaborative team; love of learning; and the ability to integrate technology into classroom instruction. Candidates should be willing to work as a collaborative member of the department and to teach a range of classes according to the needs of the department.
