Job Overview
Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) is seeking caring, enthusiastic, and capable Substitute Teachers to support our Primary School classrooms (Junior Kindergarten through Grade 3). Substitute Teachers play an essential role in ensuring the continuity of learning for JK–3 students. They are expected to maintain a warm, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment, follow teacher-prepared lesson plans, and collaborate with colleagues to support each child’s growth and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Support and model the mission, values, and community standards of Montclair Kimberley Academy
- Provide instructional coverage following lesson plans prepared by teachers
- Create a nurturing, inclusive, and safe classroom environment for early childhood and lower elementary learners (JK–3)
- Lead Morning Meeting routines and build strong classroom communities rooted in mutual respect and care (Responsive Classroom approach)
- Demonstrate understanding of the developmental, social, emotional, and academic needs of young children
- Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators to support classroom continuity
- Facilitate transitions to encore classes (arts, music, world language, PE, library) and supervise snack, recess, and other community activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (minimum 60 college credits required)
- Experience working with children in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 3 for at least 2-3 years is a MUST (school or childcare setting strongly preferred)
- Understanding of early childhood and elementary curriculum expectations
- Ability to adapt, engage, and manage classrooms with patience, flexibility, and care
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in practice
Work Schedule
- Must be available 3-4 times out a week and for emergency on-calls
- Schedule: 7:30 am - 3:00 pm
Compensation
Daily Rate: $125
