Director of Operations
The Montclair’s local education fund, is an independent non-profit that raises private dollars to engage and empower students, teachers and supporters of public education. MFEE drives innovation and collaborates with the Montclair community to support equitable access to high-quality education for all students.
The Director of Operations is a key member of MFEE’s leadership team, responsible for ensuring the smooth, strategic, and mission-aligned functioning of the organization. This role oversees operations, board management, program and staff supervision, and internal systems, while partnering closely with the Executive Director to drive organizational effectiveness and sustainability.

Responsibilities:
Organizational Operations & Administration
- Oversee financial operations in partnership with the Executive Director, including annual budget development, forecasting, and monitoring.
- Supervise the Administrative Coordinator to ensure efficient execution of payroll, bookkeeping (QuickBooks), and office management.
- Serve as the hiring manager for all staff and interns, leading recruitment, onboarding, and performance management processes.
- Oversee MFEE’s technology infrastructure, ensuring effective systems, data security, and user support.
- Assess and implement tools and systems to improve efficiency and workflow.
- Manage organizational space and facility needs.
Board Operations & Governance
- Partner with the Executive Director to support Board of Trustees engagement, development, and recruitment.
- Manage scheduling, agenda development, and distribution of materials for Board and committee meetings.
- Ensure strong governance practices and maintain accurate records of Board actions.
Fundraising & Development
- Provide strategic oversight of fundraising operations, working closely with the Executive Director and Director of Development (Events).
- Support donor cultivation and stewardship efforts as needed.
- Monitor fundraising progress and assist in aligning development goals with organizational priorities.
Program Oversight
- Work with the Executive Director to provide leadership and supervision for the organizational programs.
- Supervise the Grants Coordinator to ensure a strong, equitable, and effective grantmaking process — including outreach to increase applicant volume and diversity, leading the review process, and preparing reports for the Board.
Communications
- Supervise the Director of Communications and provide feedback on external communications strategy.
- Review weekly newsletters and collaborate on social media content to ensure alignment with MFEE’s voice and goals.
Volunteer Engagement
- Work with the Director of Programs to support and strengthen volunteer engagement across programs and events.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure volunteers are meaningfully integrated into MFEE’s work and mission.
Qualifications
- Excellent organizational and project management skills; able to balance multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience or strong interest in nonprofit operations, administration, or management, with a demonstrated ability to learn quickly and take initiative.
- Ability to supervise and support staff and manage collaborative, cross-functional projects.
- Experience with budgeting and financial processes; familiarity with QuickBooks or a willingness to learn.
- Experience with or enthusiasm for hiring, staff development, and fostering a positive, inclusive team culture.
- Comfort with technology systems and a proactive approach to learning new tools and improving infrastructure.
- Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working effectively with executive leadership and boards of directors.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $43,000 - $48,000, depending on experience
- 30 hours per week position with flexible scheduling within the needs of the organization.
