The Department of Native American Studies is seeking a Good Relations Learning Community Coordinator for American Indian/Alaska Native Student Success Services (AI/ANSSS). This position serves as an advocate and mentor, committed to providing excellent student and academic support to increase the recruitment, retention and academic success of American Indian and Alaska Native students at Montana State University.

Position Details

General Statement

American Indian/Alaska Native Student Success Services is dedicated to the enrollment, achievement, and success of American Indian and Alaska Native students at Montana State University. AI/ANSSS, through a collaborative and nurturing philosophy, supports Native students and their families navigate the transition to Montana State University and the Bozeman community. The AI/ANSSS provides advocacy on behalf of Native students with the MSU faculty, staff, and programs while supporting Native student academic, social, personal, and cultural growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and supervise mentors and mentees for AI/AN student mentorship programs (Good Relations Learning Community), overseeing development and implementation of program activities and engagement opportunities
  • Develop, organize, plan and coordinate activities for AI/ANSSS, inclusive of annual Powwow facilitation.
  • Track and create reports for student involvement.
  • Budget, manage, track, and report on grant funding and spending, specific to Good Relations efforts.
  • Collaborate with Cultural Outreach and Communications Coordinator regarding budgeting and student engagement events.
  • Serve American Indian/Alaska Native students needing and seeking to become academically and personally successful at Montana State University.
  • Provide culturally sensitive career and academic advising.
  • Participate in Native student-related groups on campus.
  • Coordinate events and reservations for the American Indian Hall Building.
  • In coordination with University Communications and NAS staff and faculty:
    • Create materials for MSU AI/ANSSS print and digital platforms.
    • Develop, update, and maintain MSU AI/ANSSS electronic/social media resources, including the AIC website, AI/ANSSS website, Talking Circle, and MSU Native American Resource Directory Website.
    • Produce and disseminate the Native American Studies departmental newsletter.
  • Manage digital signage in AIH.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • 1-3 years demonstrated experience working with economically disadvantaged and underrepresented college students or similar populations as a mentor/advisor/advocate.
  • Experience coordinating and managing small and large events.
  • Experience giving oral presentations and speaking publicly to groups, especially college students.
  • Demonstrated computer and software experience, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, graphics, and basic web html.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with graphic design tools.
  • Knowledge of American Indian cultures, history, and contemporary issues, particularly those tribes in Montana and surrounding states.

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and ability to follow through on tasks and projects to completion.
  • Ability to learn MSU policies, procedures, and systems for student data tracking.
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relations with coworkers, faculty, students, supervisors, and the public.
  • Represent the Department of Native American Studies and its programs in a professional and courteous manner.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Work may involve evening hours and occasional weekend hours to meet the programmatic needs of the position.

This position is contingent upon continued grant funding. This position is currently tentatively funded through June 30, 2028, with the potential to continue, dependent upon available grant funding
