Montana State University is entering a period of ambitious change in its use of data, and engaged in significant, positive transformation. Under the leadership of the Chief Data Officer, University Data and Analytics (UDA) works collaboratively across the University community to support and expand the strategic use of data.
The Data Management & Analytics Manager position is a key position responsible for managing the four-campus institutional data warehousing and analytics infrastructure. The successful candidate will co-lead the implementation and optimization of Edify, EAB’s data management and analytics platform, leveraging it to centralize data, manage integrations, and produce actionable insights for a wide range of stakeholders, including those involved in student, financial aid, and human resources data. This position will promote data quality initiatives, and ensure that campus data is continually more reliable, accurate, trustworthy, and accessible. This position will also serve an important role in the evolution of data warehousing solutions, working with stakeholders at each of the four MSU campuses to configure and validate data to each campus’ specific needs.

General Statement
The Data Management & Analytics Manager will work closely with the Chief Data Officer (CDO) and Associate Chief Data Officer (ACDO) to understand the data governance environment at the University. They will identify or design solutions and frameworks that will serve to address these needs and increase the reliability and trustworthiness of data across campus with the Edify Institutional Data Warehouse. In their role, the Data Management & Analytics Manager will collaborate closely with the UDA data science and analytics team to ensure that governance and warehousing solutions are implemented in an effective and efficient manner. They will work with the ACDO to deploy Edify to effectively share, protect, and facilitate the leveraging of data as an asset in university planning, decision-making, and in support of the University’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of Edify, integrating with various systems (e.g., Banner, Canvas, Reach CRM).
- Deliver Edify reporting and analytics solutions that inform strategic planning, student success initiatives, and operational improvements.
- Establish data-quality frameworks and collaborate with business units to define enterprise data governance standards for use long-term.
- Work across campus to identify new and disparate data sources. Make recommendations to consolidate or eliminate unnecessary sources.
- Analyze and assess business processes and their relationships to institutional data.
- Embed data governance and analytics into recurring institutional decision‑making processes by partnering with functional areas to ensure decisions are informed by consistent definitions, shared metrics, and trusted data assets.
- Uphold data quality and validation standards to promote consistency, accuracy, and institutional trust in reporting.
- Review data architecture compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., FERPA) and address concerns to bring into compliance.
- Determine and regularly reassess priorities for data governance and analytics initiatives in Edify based on institutional decision-making needs, capacity, risk, and strategic impact.
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of data glossaries and metadata management.
- Communicate complex data concepts to non-technical audiences through presentations and workshops.
- Participate and make policy recommendations in institutional data governance committees and task forces (generally chaired by the Chief Data Officer).
- Represent UDA on assigned campus committees and meetings.
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, data science, mathematics/statistics, higher education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in institutional research or analytics environments.
- Intermediate knowledge of business intelligence tools (such as Tableau) and scripting languages (such as R and SQL).
- Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills.
- Experience designing and applying statistical methods to research projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Advanced degree in social sciences, data science, mathematics/statistics, higher education, or related field.
- Experience operating in an Ellucian Banner ERP environment.
- Experience working in a higher education setting, with a demonstrated understanding of how an institution of higher learning operates.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching, training, or development.
- Experience with data integration and data warehousing, preferably in Edify.
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to organize and work effectively in a matrixed environment with cross-functional project teams from various departments and locations.
- Ability to mentor and coach less experienced technical persons.
- Ability to identify process inefficiencies and areas for improvement.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
