Montana State University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to fill a senior staff psychologist position to provide services to students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds for the 2026-27 year. The senior staff psychologist will engage in services including clinical psychotherapy, outreach, consultation, and participate in the training program which includes an APA accredited doctoral internship in psychology.
CAPS is part of Student Wellness at MSU and works closely with partners in Student Health Services and Campus Recreation. Each of these departments is now located in the new Student Wellness Center to enhance student health and well-being in one facility.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provision of multi-culturally sensitive psychotherapy.
  • Provision of intakes, individual, and group counseling.
  • Crisis intervention.
  • Outreach and consultation to the campus community.
  • Development of a specific area of specialized clinical interest relevant to a college counseling setting.
  • Participation in agency meetings and projects.
  • Engagement with the CAPS training program including supervision and training duties.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
1. Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling psychology from an APA accredited program by start date.

2. Completion of a doctoral internship in psychology from an APA Accredited internship program.

3. Licensed as a psychologist in the State of Montana or eligible to take the MT psychologist licensure exam no later than December 2027.

4. Demonstrated clinical skill and experience working with adults including crisis assessment and intervention.

5. Demonstrated experience working clinically with people from various backgrounds and beliefs.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
1. Licensed as a mental health professional in Montana.

2. Post-doctoral clinical experience.

3. Experience working in a university counseling center and/or demonstrated potential for the variety of tasks required.

4. Experience providing outreach and consultation services on a university campus.

5. Experience working on an integrated, multidisciplinary team.

6. Specific interest and/or experience in one of the following areas: clinical supervision and training, provision of clinical and outreach services with a specialized population, substance abuse treatment, provision of services to neurodivergent students, working with athletes, or other area of specialty.

  • Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills; have the ability to work effectively with people of many backgrounds. Possess the ability to be flexible and respond quickly to urgent needs that arise from the campus community.
  • Demonstrate the capacity to work autonomously and also engage in collaborative team efforts.
  • Have the ability to complete documentation in a timely manner in accordance with agency policies and ethical standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information and follow all legal and ethical standards of psychologists.
  • Have the ability to use computer programs (including an electronic health record)to complete job duties and assist in agency functioning.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
The position is full-time for 10 months (August – May).
Summer (June and July) FTE Is negotiable 0.5 to 1.0 FTE
