What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Manager, March – August 5 (Seasonal) position at Montalvo Arts Center?
Montalvo Arts Center is seeking an energetic leader for our dynamic summer arts education camps. The Camp Manager oversees the summer camp program planning, preparations, staff and volunteer training, and on-site management. Montalvo Arts Center Summer Camps are day camps that function 9am – 4pm Monday – Friday beginning June 8 through July 31. Under the direction of the Director of Outreach and Education, the Camp Manager ensures the camp’s successful operation by managing registration, staffing, logistics, and communication with families and teaching artists. This position also oversees the July 1 overnight family camp, Starry Starry Night.
Schedule: Part-Time in March and April: Approximately 10 – 20 hours per week
Full-Time May, June, July, Aug 1 – Aug 5: 40 hours per week
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate all aspects of Montalvo’s Summer Arts Camp, including registration, scheduling, and family communication.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise camp instructors, assistants, and volunteers.
- Manage daily camp operations: check-in/out, attendance tracking, materials preparation, and camper safety.
- Support teaching artists with supplies, classroom setup, and curriculum delivery.
- Track budgets, payments, and invoices for camp staff.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with parents, campers, and staff regarding camp logistics, policies, and expectations.
- Develop and update documentation such as orientation materials, staff handbooks, and family packets.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, health, and emergency protocols.
- Support family or public events connected to the camp season, such as Art Splash and Starry Night.
Education, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Education, Recreation, Arts Administration, any art discipline, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing youth programs, summer camps, or arts education initiatives.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills; ability to guide diverse teams.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to multitask and adapt in a dynamic environment.
- PC proficient in Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, and Excel.
- Experience in the arts and a passion for creative youth engagement preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification and DOJ LiveScan fingerprint clearance required (can be obtained upon hire).
- Must be available full-time during summer camp operations, including occasional weekends.
- Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least three years.
Working Conditions & Physical Tasks:
Most job functions are performed in studio setting and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; sit; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Valid driver’s license required. Background check and DOJ LiveScan fingerprint clearance required—associated fees will be paid by Montalvo Arts Center.
Compensation: $33.00 p/hr. This position is not eligible for employee benefits.
