We are seeking a skilled custodian to join our team in performing a variety daily tasks in keeping the library clean and welcoming for our patrons and staff. Expertise
Performs a variety of janitorial duties to provide clean, safe, and welcoming facilities and grounds for Library patrons and staff. Uses appropriate equipment, products, and techniques to assist in the preservation of library assets.
Maintains a clean and welcoming environment for the library's visitors and staff. Provides support to co-workers and fellow team members. Works to increase the efficiency of custodial maintenance, creating a consistently pleasing environment for all.
Enjoys paying special attention to detail and consistently reviews work to minimize missing assigned and shared tasks. Participates in interdepartmental communications. Demonstrates eagerness to lend a hand to fellow custodians and responds to special requests for assistance.
Conducts work in a safe manner. Responsible for the proper care and use of the materials and chemicals used to maintain library cleanliness. Attends related training to improve knowledge of techniques and safe handling of equipment, materials, and products.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Daily– following established routines with emphasis on heavily use areas:
- Utilizes safe practices in the performance of job duties, and adheres to established safety practices.
- Ensures that established infection control and universal precaution practices are maintained when performing housekeeping procedures.
- Cleans and disinfects all restroom surfaces. Checks and replenishes supplies to insure the facilities are adequately stocked at all times.
- Utilizes Standard Precautions when exposure to blood and body fluid.
- Cleans, dusts or polishes hard surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment surfaces. Cleans windows and other glass.
- Sweeps, mops, and vacuums traffic areas on a daily basis; spot cleans carpets and hard floor areas, as needed. Maintains various flooring surfaces to promote customer satisfaction.
- May empty outside trash cans and waste baskets from staff and public areas.
- May maintain superior curb appeal; picks up loose debris inside and outside facilities. May assist with maintaining outdoor parking lots and walkways by removing trash, leaves, and other debris.
- Follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
- Dresses suitable for the job and the specific task at hand and must maintain good personal hygiene.
- Performs other functions as assigned to insure effective and smooth continuity of Library operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Interpersonal skills for interacting with other employees and outside contacts in a tactful and professional manner
- Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend written materials, and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of the safe and effective use of various cleaning methods, cleaners, supplies, and chemicals.
- Physical and operational ability to perform cleaning activities while using standard cleaning tools and equipment (vacuums, mops, dusters, etc.).
- Ability to work independently.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
Required Education/ Experience and License/Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend instructions, including equipment and product safety labels, is required.
- Previous custodial experience strongly preferred. Other work/life experience demonstrating related skills may be considered.
Working Conditions and Requirements
- Frequent moving/transporting of materials and equipment from 25 lbs. – 50 lbs. of weight. Loads 75 lbs. must be performed with another staff member's assistance.
- Frequent repetitive actions/motions such as:
- Moving, transporting, pushing/pulling, and reaching for materials; often using hand truck or cart.
- Ascending/descending ladders and other equipment.
- Positioning to maintain floors and related equipment.
- Use of mops, brooms and other cleaning equipment.
- Remaining stationary for short or extended times.
- Cleaning high, low, mid-level and hard to reach locations.
- Requires the ability to read, observe, closely inspect, and detect areas needing cleaning.
- Effective communication to relay and perceive information when interacting with others.
- Regular safe operation of cleaning machinery and equipment. Maintains awareness and observation of general surroundings and activities.
- Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
- Occasional physical contact with patrons; occasional exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and other bodily fluids.
- Regular exposure to odors.
- Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
- May encounter exposure to outside elements; heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when performing outside tasks.
Supervision Received
Occasional supervision/instruction; most duties are related, and work is performed following standard instructions and procedures. May occasionally develop own methods to perform work. Unusual problems are referred, frequently with suggestions for correction, to the supervisor.
